Recount Flips Result in Milford Aldermen Race

Final tallies give incumbent the win.

An incumbent on the Milford Board of Aldermen will serve another two-year term after a recount last week reversed a result on the city’s chief governing body.

Going into the recount, Greta Stanford trailed fellow Democrat James Patterson by one vote for the last of three seats in the First District.

Stanford, the incumbent, had received 1,250 votes to Patterson’s 1,251. State law mandates a recount in a race decided by fewer than 20 votes.

The recount flipped the final tallies in Stanford’s favor as the new numbers showed the incumbent with a two-vote advantage, 1,209 to 1,207.

The 40-something vote discrepancy with the initial results was attributed to a transcribing error on election night wherein absentee ballot votes were miscounted, said Democratic Deputy Registrar of Voters Kerri Rowland.

Stanford’s win means all incumbent aldermen in the First District won re-election. Republicans Brian Bier and Anthony Giannattasio were also elected to another term.

Democrats maintained their 9-6 majority on the Board of Aldermen in this year's municipal election.

Another recount that was carried out last week confirmed Democrat Carl Moore’s win over Republican Mark Bender in the race for Fourth District Planning and Zoning Board.

Democrats took four of five Planning and Zoning Board races and in doing so turned an 8-2 Republican majority on the board to a 6-4 Democratic advantage.
