Election Recounts On Tap in Milford

For two races: Board of Aldermen and Planning and Zoning.

A couple incumbents who lost their respective seats in last week’s municipal election will be hoping for a better result with a state-mandated recount this week.

State law requires a recount in a race decided by fewer than 20 votes.

Having said that, one incumbent has a much better chance of a more favorable outcome than the other.

By one vote incumbent Greta Stanford lost her First District Board of Aldermen post to fellow Democrat James Patterson, 1,250 to 1,251.

Patterson was the last of three aldermen in, joining incumbent Republicans Brian Bier and Anthony Giannattasio, who collected 1,382 and 1,384 votes, respectively.

The two Republicans, by the way, could thank the Independent Party for winning re-election, as that’s where the votes came which ultimately distanced the candidates. Bier received 149 Independent votes and Giannattasio got 150.

Though the race wasn’t as close as the one for First District Board of Aldermen, the contest for Fourth District Planning and Zoning Board also is scheduled for a recount this week.

There, incumbent Mark Bender, a Republican who is currently chairman of the board, lost to Democrat Carl Moore by 17 votes, 1,145 to 1,162, respectively.

Moore’s win was a big one, too, as it helped give the Democrats a 6-4 majority on the board, reversing an 8-2 Republican advantage.

The City Clerk’s office last week could not say what day the recount would be. We’ll update this article when that information becomes available (City Hall was closed Monday in observance of Veterans Day).
