The Russos reflect fondly on a career in dentistry that spans 58 years in Milford.
In 1954, a gallon of gas cost 22 cents, Father Knows Best aired on television—and Anthony Russo, D.M.D., opened a dental practice in Milford. Perhaps in the Russo household father really did know best, because his son Walter, with two of his three siblings, practices dental medicine today. Walter Russo, D.M.D., continues the practice of general dentistry on Milford’s Prospect Street. His brother Peter is an orthodontist in Branford, and Jane, one of his two sisters, practices general dentistry in Stratford. His second sister Martha is a professor of sculpture and ceramics in Colorado. “It really hasn’t changed that much downtown,” said Anthony of the city where he had his first office above the Milford Citizen — today, the Rainbow Gardens…

The retail store is closing its store in East Haven to move to Milford.
City residents will have a new shopping destination soon when the popular HomeGoods store sets up shop at Milford Crossings on the Post Road. Milford's gain comes at East Haven's loss. HomeGoods will be closing its 68 Frontage Road store in East Haven in April to move to Milford, according to a New Haven Register report. HomeGoods officials confirmed the East Haven store will close in early April, and then reopen at a spot in the Milford Crossing shopping mall later that month. Although the Frontage Road location is closing permanently, all 68 employees who currently work there will be given the opportunity to retain their positions with the company at the Milford store. 'Lease Issue' Arthur DeSorbo, who serves as East Haven's economic …

"Anyone with a normal IQ can be hypnotized."
Joann Dunsing says hypnosis works, especially as a tool for weight loss, smoking cessation and stress reduction. Those are the three main reasons people come to her Milford office for help from Dunsing, a Connecticut certified hypnotist. She said hypnosis quiets the "critical brain" and puts a person into a relaxed state where they are open to suggestion. When in this state, people remain completely aware of their surroundings. A good example is so-called "highway hypnosis," when a driver on the highway zones out and absent-mindedly drives right past his exit. Dunsing said it happens to everyone. "That’s just an excellent example. We’re constantly doing it." But it doesn’t mean you couldn’t react to a traffic situation. Dunsing’s web site …

Claiming your business on Patch offers huge rewards.
Call it a thoroughly modern dilemma. You can get any style of shoe delivered right to your door in 24 hours via the Internet, but must sort through five pages of random Google results just to find the right number for the pizza joint down the street. Oh and P.S.—the hours on some robo-generated listing are completely wrong. Well Patch would hate to see anyone pizza-less and hungry (or without those killer boots) so that's why we launched Milford Patch in November 2010 with the area's most comprehensive and detailed business directory, called "Places." You can find descriptions, hours, what credit cards are accepted, even parking — all verified by an actual human being, and all 100 percent local. And no more driving around to a shop only to…

A former police officer introduces Milford to the classic western saloon.
If you're looking for a casual watering hole complete with line dancing and a steer skull, you won't have to travel south of the Mason-Dixon line. Former Stamford police officer Dennis Jordhamo has created the classic, log cabin-style saloon right here in Milford - Mustang Sally's Saloon. Pool tournaments and mechanical bull riding with a vast array of libations await you at the 765 Boston Post Road location. Jordhamo gave Milford Patch a tour of the completely renovated space and shared the story of his success in the Milford community. What goes into transitioning from police officer to the owner of a saloon? Jordhamo: I was a cop in Stamford for 19 years until I had a massive heart attack in 2006. So I retired, took a few years off to…

Trans-Lite scores big with work on Metro-North's new M-8 rail cars.
One family's history of bright ideas is lighting up the local economy. Trans-Lite, Inc., a source for lighting in Milford since the mid-1950s, has a new claim to fame: their lights are shining on the new Metro-North M-8 rail cars. William Maley Jr. works with founder and father William Maley Sr., brother Andrew and daughter Sarah at the company's Wampus Lane location. Maley Jr. says the massive project for Kawasaki has kept more than 70 jobs in Milford at their factory and constitutes roughly a third of the company’s business. Trans-Lite, which won a bidding war for the project against companies from as far as Texas, was very much on its own in its quest to acquire a contract for the new trains, according to Maley Jr. “A lot of other …

Shawn Peterson went from being a PEZ fan to employee. Now he’s overseeing the just-opened visitor center at the U.S. headquarters in Orange.
Shawn Peterson parlayed his world-class collection of thousands of PEZ dispensers into a dream job with the company. He’s the first collector to work for the company. “It’s just the novelty of it all,” he says, when asked why he started collecting the classic candy dispensers. Peterson oversees the new 4,000-square-foot visitor center. Part museum and part interactive exhibit, it’s an ode to PEZ’s foothold on nostalgia and its plans for the future. Some of the highlights include a towering PEZ dispenser, a timeline on the company’s unlikely trajectory, and a look at the factory that goes through 100,000 pounds of sugar a week. The hundreds of dispensers on display are from Peterson’s personal collection. Sports teams, Disney characters, …
