Dairy Queen? Carvel? What a stupid survey.
Christy Chi July 22, 2014 at 08:29 pm
Dairy Queen doesn't serve ice cream. It has to be classified by them as a frozen treat since itRead More doesn't meet the content requirements to be called ice cream.

Its obvious that most people in this poll are from the Mid and Western portions of the state.

Frank in bury. If you are old enough to remember the O,Neil budget fiasco that resulted in theRead More implementation of the state income tax of 4.5%, the alternative was a 12% sales tax. That sales tax would have been also paid predominantly by Fairfield County residents. They carry, financially, the other 8 counties in Connecticut.
arkay July 22, 2014 at 12:57 am
@Gus, counties don't actually mean anything in CT, just geographic borders. Bridgeport is as much ofRead More a money suck as any city in the state, and that's in FFC. There's plenty of affluent communities in New Haven, Hartford, Litchfield counties (and elsewhere) that pay their fair share. Fairfield County does pay a proportionally high amount of taxes, but that is in a select few towns - definitely not northern or eastern FFC, which is more in line with other parts of the state.
Gus R. Horvath July 22, 2014 at 11:55 am
arkay. I was born and grew up in Bridgeport in the 1930s to1960s when it was known as the park city.Read More It was not the drag on Fairfield County it is today. The point I wish to make is that the much maligned billionaires of Fairfield County contribute an inordinate amount financial resources to the state of Connecticut helping to reduce your and my tax burden. My son is a building engineer for Ray Dalio's hedge fund so I am aware of the goings on there.

Who the hell would buy that crap when there are so many good local pizza places?
JP July 2, 2014 at 07:23 am
I agree. Milford has some very good pizza places and West Haven has a few of the best in the countryRead More -- can't imagine why anyone would go to Papa John's. But then, I can't figure our why anybody goes to Olive Garden or Friday's either.
JP July 2, 2014 at 12:14 pm
I meant New Haven. Here's an article from USA Today from last year on the best pizza in America:Read More http://www.usatoday.com/story/travel/destinations/2013/11/30/best-pizza-in-america/3785309/ Pepe's was listed #1, Sally's #7, and Modern was #11.

MiniGolf. Set far back from the main road. Its 25 min drive to the middle of nowhere to go toRead More Sports Center of CT. I wonder what else they would put there. From Google Maps it looks like a massive lot. Panera and Verizon are fairly small shops.
Shira Kostika July 2, 2014 at 02:46 pm
I remember when it was Milford Amusement Center all those years ago and my parents would take me outRead More for a fun day indoors. I think that the development is ok (do we really need another Panera Bread?) although I wish there would be an eatery there that hasn't made a much needed appearance yet in CT- like a Dave&Busters. Something that would echo the arcade that once was.
Tmc July 13, 2014 at 11:33 pm
Arcades are passe what with LARP so popular today. A site like Going to the Game in North Haven orRead More similar is what should be put there.

I must say with all due respects to our vets, that many were wished to join but were not allowed forRead More health reasons, simply asthma disqualified me. I myself have given to the community for 15-20 years. Are the towns supporting local community service volunteers with preferential chances on jobs? Lord knows after the 100s of thousands of hours I've done for the local towns I've lived in, I could use some help getting a job, because putting someone in front of me simply because they were in the reserves is offensive to me.
Igor June 23, 2014 at 04:28 pm
Jim there is a valid reason that vets should be getting special treatment in the job market. As IRead More was serving in the Navy for 4 years men my age were building seniority at their place of employment thus they got the promotions. That being said I don't think that should be the deciding factor on hiring someone.
Patricia Pell June 24, 2014 at 01:06 pm
Tips are great and appreciated by wait staff. That said, those of us who don't have extra sometimesRead More can't tip at all. Given the choice we would. When is comes to no tip or not eating out at all. No tip wins. A built in system would be better. Incentive should be the responsibility of the owner, however they choose to do it. You are in the service industry after all. That is your job. You would not expect better service from your doctor if you tipped him. It is his job to make you well. You don't tip your construction worker... it is his job to build your house. They get paid to do their job.
Set the Controls June 24, 2014 at 01:57 pm
In the USA diners tip, never been disputed. If you can't afford to tip don't go out to eat.
REVMAN June 27, 2014 at 11:11 am
I tip 20-25% for good service and 5-8% for not so good service and 0% for bad service. If theRead More servicers wised up they would ALL get 20% plus.

It's called inflation. Inflation today is nearly 10% (if you measured it like we did in 1980), notRead More the 2% the Gov't keeps re-defining it to. They've redefined inflation 22 times , why? To cover-up the massive wealth transfer (theft) that results from inflation. The Top .1% in the Government and the Banks are robbing the 99.99% with inflation. Quantitative Easing is nothing more than inflation ... The Fed & The Gov't are inflating their way out of the National Debt pure and simple. Get used to smaller and smaller packages. Get used to higher and higher prices. Pantry Portfolios all over the country are expected to yield 10% or better over the next few years, so load up on non-perishables, it'll prove to be a great investment! Welcome to the Zero-Growth New Normal.

If this story was about any other business raising their prices, we'd be reading about protests orRead More "fat cats" getting fatter, etc. etc.

Since Ms. Antolini has taken to the patch to assail our community with her vindictive rhetoric sheRead More has negated a once useful source of information. Her abrasive, self-serving approach is not representative of our community. Her irrational rants create unneeded controversy doing nothing but leaving Ms. Antolini feeling fulfilled that she has cast, yet again, a dark cloud over our community. Credible community leaders will not engage with any patch representative because of Ms. Antolini. Her act has grown tiresome and we, as a community we need to send her the resounding message that she is not our voice, advocate or representative in any way and her work is of no value to our town. Obviously, we can't prevent Ms. Antolini from posting, that is her right, what we can do is no longer react to her and allow these incessant rants to die a death through not validating them with a response. A.W.

No problem here with energy production...fracking/drilling .... If you don't like it stop usingRead More products made from, or transported by petroleum or gas. As to schools and quality of life....I've spent 30 years travelling around the country and lived in 10 different areas. All had great schools and a rich/pleasant culture to raise a family. In fact, generally speaking, folks in the midwest and south are overly friendly, courteous, civic minded, etc, and that draws attention. I ended up here when I retired and just can't make up my mind as to where I want to move next. P.s. this state government overreacts and fails to understand longer term implications of their actions.... like last year's firearm legislation may not seem like a big deal to most of CT; however for businesses to see how quickly something significant can change, without the benefit of a healthy two-sided debate, portrays a sense of instability and poor mgt. People from around the US aren't flocking to CT because we're safer or due to other reasons stated above. Anyone who votes to keep an incumbent politician in power is just asking for more of the same stagnancy as we've seen.

40 years of Democrat rule and we see the results. Worst Roads and bridges in the Nation, WorstRead More state to retire, 5th worst to work in, Highest tax burden, highest energy costs. Caldor was the walmart of yesterday. I was on the executive payroll & opened several stores backRead More in the eighties. Caldor also owned many subsides that were used to supply the retail stores also Caldor sold merchandise to sears & other retailers through there subsides. There were no family members intrested in taking over the business so Carl sold. After that it was all downhill. The subsidies were sold the stores were buying direct & had no clue. That was the beginning of the end. Most walmart stores in the tri state area are in former Caldor locations. Caldor once had a monopoly in the tri state area. But Good things never last long....

Worked in the Caldor buying dept in 88-90, good old Glover ave- no one was more aggressive onRead More pricing with so little stock, they would still be taking rainchecks. Ames, Bradlees, Zayre's and Caldor were so concerned with each other they didn't react to Wal-Mart and Target moving into the area. Caldor had 120 stores mostly in NE and Atlantic States.

Stay away from Dollar Tree that is where the majority of their products come from
nascarblue May 24, 2014 at 08:41 am
I agree with Joe Mancini, China has harmed not only pets also humans, they have been trying forRead More years to eliminate our pets, babies, adults, they have no conscious in my opinion they are pure evil, I check all tags on clothes and anything else I buy that may say China, in Walmart yesterday in the pet section I was speaking to a man reading a package, I asked him what he was reading and he said I a looking for China so I do not bring it home to kill my dog. when I was reading what I found was where the product was distributed from, nothing on where they were made, I ended up walking away from the treat area, scary to think these evil beings are still trying to find ways to harm or kill us, what makes me more upset is our Government is and has been aware of this for years, come on Government it seems to me in your eyes it is worth the deaths of humans and animals as long as the bottom dollar keeps rolling in, I am beginning to think you are becoming as evil as they are, pretty scary...

Last time it was this bad was August of 2001. Without a reliable train system it completely changesRead More how employment dynamic in the area.
