As a parent of two children that go to that school this message was too general. These are myRead More children and I want full and immediate disclosure including details about any potential safety concerns. Aside from that I believe the principal's actions were perfectly appropriate and I appreciate that.

Yes, better safe than sorry. I trust Ms.Williams decision 100%, this is my 7th year here as a parentRead More and feel secure. Also, isn't this what WE taxpayers pay for...the use of our police when needed! Safety is a priority!

tlk...It's very convenient for some couch potatoes to sit back and judge when they are not the onesRead More affected.

iamspartacus: No....YOU are wrong! Even if they had safety "belts" on as youRead More claim.....those are not the appropraite fall protection devices that OSHA requires. They should be wearing FULL harnesses that criss-cross their backs (which you don't see in the photo) and around both thighs. If they were truly tied-off and fell from that height with just a safety "belt" on.....they would break their backs. Whose the IDIOT now?

Last night and today went as smoothly as can be expected. I was pleased to see so many buses atRead More Westport last night with people directing commuters as to which buses to board for which stops. No complaints here.

Has Malloy found a way to tax this yet?

I agree with Chuck's comments about the barriers (unless there's a safety reason of which we are notRead More aware), but otherwise I thought the commute went smoothly this morning. I only had to wait a few minutes for a shuttle to Westport and then was on my way.

Can somebody tell me what purpose was served by MetroNorth (or Fairfield) PD putting barriers onRead More both stairs on the Fairfield station (Unqowa Rd) overpass? All this does is force commuters to walk all the way around the station to access the buses. Makes no sense. Put yellow tape to block access to the platform itself but NOT the stairways into/out of the station.

I read that Jim Cameron --the darien native and commuter rail chair is asking , to accommodateRead More displaced train riders--that parking rules be suspended so that these people have a place to park. TERRIBLE IDEA. Come on Jim!! At all of these parking lots there are never more than a handful of empty spots. All you are going to accomplish by waiving the parking rules is to allow people from (fill in the blank) to park in a spot paid for by a person who lives in (fill in the blank.) So people who commute after 745am will have no where to park. Solving nothing except transferring the problem from one person to the next. Jim--think this through. It's not like , for example, Noroton Heights has an extra 200 spots that go idle.

Monday will be a hell of a time on I-95.

Bernard, Your trip for the 30th is safe. Metro North is reopening the tracks today and Amtrak isRead More restoring service between NY & Boston as of 3 PM or so in both directions.

Porter, Many love to talk about the Free Market when it comes to trains. Only the Free Market noRead More longer exists. In fact, trains were the only form of transportation, save horses and walking, that existed in a true Free Market. Years ago, passenger trains were all privately owned & operated. The Free Market died when Government started subsidizing flying & driving. --------- And here's one other data point for you. According to the Taxpayer's Receipt for 2009, a married couple with 2 kids and $80K in income watched $110.06 of their Federal income tax dollars go into highways. A retired couple with $100K in income saw $89.38 go to the highways, even if they can no longer drive a car, much less own one. That big, bad Amtrak that many like you love to complain about. The couple with 2 kids paid $3.83 towards that, the retired couple $3.11.

Porter, How quickly you forget what you've already ready. No doubt that's do to that fact that youRead More don't wish to admit the truth to yourself. It's called dodging and misdirection what you're doing. The first link that I provided you showed that in 2010 it was 42%. The second link that I provided you with showed that in 2007 it was 51%, before putting back in diverted monies which would bring it back up to 65%. I'm sorry Sir, but the only one being dishonest here is YOU! -------- As for zeroing in when the tax was last raised, I only did that because you questioned my time line, again because you weren't paying attention to what you read. ----------- So once again, go back to the Subsidyscope link, which provides you with a nice pretty picture of the funding since the start of the Interstate Highway System. It quite clearly shows that we've never gotten as high 90% in the entire history of the Interstate Highway System. -------- And once again, since the Federal fuel tax was diverted from its primary purpose of paying down out national debt, as enacted back in 1932 by then President Herbert Hoover, the real truth is that the numbers are ever lower than what is shown in the Subsidyscope graph. Since you like to claim that the money diverted to transit should count, I'm going to claim that every dime in Federal money was not paid for by drivers since it was diverted from paying on the debt as was intended.

There are videos on youtube and elsewhere that show major construction along that very same part ofRead More the track. The construction undermined the tracks and caused this accident. Who is the contractor?

Somehow I just can't follow the math here. 45% of her gross income. She's maxed out in her 401kRead More Roth IRA and HSA. The HSA for 2013 max contribution limit is $3,250. The max 401k contribution is $17,500 and the max IRA contribution is $5,500. The total she is contributing in 2013 is $26,250 per year. Now, assuming this is 45% of her salary she would have approximately 29,000 before tax. Assume about 20% tax bracket that's $5,800 per year. Now we're down to 23,200 a year or $1,900 per month for her expenses. Take out expenses and maybe she doesn't have 2 nickels to rub together. Sure it's great to retire early but let's see her try that here in Connecticut. It ain't going to happen.

I guess life is good for Ms. Konkoly. I would normally say congratulations, but it's obvious thatRead More she has never experienced a loss of a job that caused severe strain on a family's finances. We live in a very volatile time when it comes to the economy. Even those who've planned carefully have found it near impossible to save like this woman. Not sure if I should feel fortunate to be given such eye-opening advice, but I do not. It almost seems like a dig against those who have struggled financially and have no opportunity of spending money on themselves when all of it goes to supporting their family. So to Ms. Konkoly, all the happiness during your retirement and hope that you do not experience what other Americans having been struggling with during that time, otherwise we can expect a not so happy and peppy post-retirement update.
