By PHIL BRODSKY

After defeating West Haven 94-76 last week, the Foran High boy's swim team had its three-meet winning streak come to an end when it was defeated 98-80 by Shelton. Coach Kristen Skuches’ Lions are now 4-5.

Foran held a slim 2 point lead over Shelton (71-69) heading into the 100-yard breaststroke but the Gaels swept that event and turned their deficit into an 82-74 lead.

Foran could still have won the meet as it had taken both first and second place in the 400 free relay. That, however, was not in the cards. Shelton won that event and wrapped up its victory.

“Getting swept in the breaststroke was the turning point in the meet,” Skuches said. “Shelton was so deep in breaststrokers. We couldn’t compete with them.”

The meet began with Rich Enders, Dylan Swanepoel, Jia Wei Fan, and Andrew DeLuke winning the 200 medley relay in 1 minute, 49.24 seconds. Swanepoel followed that with a first place 2:06.56 in the individual medley. DeLuke and Josh Bartosiewicz going 1-2 in the 50 free (24.01 and 24.99).  It was the same story for Swanepoel and DeLuke in the 100 butterfly (56.42 and 57.39). Enders claimed both the 100 free (51.59) and the 100 backstroke (58.79).

According to Skuches, “My boys did a great job against Shelton. I couldn’t have asked them for anything more. They were up and ready to race. We had so many time drops. There’s no question that the effort was there. We just couldn’t pull out the win.”

The Lions’ meet against West Haven was a totally different story. They won first place in every event and held a whopping 94-42 lead when Skuches chose to go exhibition in the final 3 races of the day.

Enders, DeLuke, Fan, and Bartosiewicz opened up the meet with a 1:54.21 win in the 200 medley relay. DeLuke’s 2:04.46 was tops in the 200 free as was Enders’ 2:10.95 in the 200 individual medley. Following Bartosiewicz’s 24.81 win in the 50 free, Stan Olsson finished first in the diving competition with a score of 137.80.

Enderes came back to take the 100 butterfly (1:00.33), Swanepoel’s 50.29 was the best time in the 100 free, and Matt Haselkamp added a first place 5:42.65 in the 500 free. Swanepoel, Dan Gallup, Rodger McDonald, and Bartosiewicz took a blue ribbon in the 200 free relay.

While Foran went exhibition in the meet’s last 3 events, it still had the best time in each one. DeLuke rang up a 1:07.52 in the 100 backstroke. Swanepooel added a 1:10.93 in the 100 breaststroke and the Lions’ 400 free relay (Gallup, Haselkamp, Enders, and DeLuke) closed the meet with a 3:42.69.

“I thought we swam well against West Haven.  I mixed kids up in different events and saw a lot of good swims, especially from younger swimmers like Rodger McDonald (who qualified for States in the 100 free) and Dan Gallup. Adam LaRocca, and Patrick Williams had fantastic days!”
