Law Softball Enters Season With High Hopes

Improved pitching and a focus on offense highlight the team's 2011 goals.

The Jonathan Law High School softball team has high hopes for a successful season in 2011. The Eagles finished with a 7-13 record in 2010, falling just one win short of qualifying to play in the state tournament.

The Eagles welcome three freshmen to the varsity squad this year: Danielle Gray, Stephanie Cameron and Jenna Bernard, a pitcher.

“We have the luxury of having two pitchers this year, which is good to have to fall back on and it will make our team much stronger,” said Assistant Coach Dave Mills.

Stephanie Peloso, the returning pitcher, started every game for Jonathan Law last season.

“We are really going to be focusing on offense this year. For the next couple of weeks we will work on getting their bats going, trying to get our best nine hitters in the lineup and then work with what we have for defense,” said Head Coach Melanie Paolini.

A few isolated incidents of bad attitude caused a degree of distraction for the team in the past, but the girls have shown close-knit camaraderie in conditioning that Paolini knows will carry into the season.

The team's biggest challenge for the 2011 season is going to be replacing Kelly Olencki, the team’s three-time all-state catcher who graduated last spring.

Law’s season opener is at home on Wednesday, April 6 at 3:45 p.m. against East Haven High School.
