Priscilla Lynn, owner and founder of PrisCo Consulting, shares with Patch readers a bit about her Milford-based public relations and marketing firm.

How did you come up with the name?
My first name is Priscilla, and I decided to open a public relations and integrated company firm in 1989 - so...Priscilla's company was branded as PrisCo.

Why choose that location? Why start a business in this town?
I moved my office to the Downtown Milford district several years ago to be closer to the heartbeat of the 'Small City with a Big Heart,' and to serve many of my clients needs more readily - including the Downtown Milford Business Association.

Briefly, what business are you in?
Public Relations & Integrated Marketing Services

What's the most difficult moment or challenge you've faced as a business owner?
One solid impact and challenge was the advent and widespread adoption of social media as a viable and popular communications method, especially online platforms that offer the opportunity to post 'User Generated Content' (UGC).

Were there any challenges that made you second guess your decision to be an entrepreneur?
The budget of an entrepreneur is often challenged, especially sustaining business during the storms of economic change. A secondary challenge is to keep personal issues compartmentalized so they don't bleed over and affect business operations.

What's been your favorite moment or proudest achievement since opening?
Every year I'm another year in business, I look back and say "Well, that was the Best. Year. Ever." This year I am celebrating my 25th year in business during the City of Milford's 375th Anniversary Celebration. I am also particularly proud of launching the Milford Chamber's 'Health & Wellness Council' seven years ago, and being a 3-time honoree during their 'Awards of Distinction' annual event: Friend of the Chamber; Ambassador of the Year; and Health & Wellness Council Award.

What's the most innovative idea your employees or customers have had that you put into practice?
Certainly my most favorite is the cause-related marketing tactics I implement for clients. This often requires innovative processes to develop and forge alliances between a client and the worthy cause.

How do you deal with difficult customers?
Whaaat? No such animal. But, seriously, if presented with a difficult customer, I would remember that we are all human and therefore impacted by things beyond our control. They may just be having a bad day/week/month, be stressed, or have something else bothering them that has nothing to do with my business relationship with them. Just because I happen to encounter them at the wrong time/place, I try to remember this and have empathy. Should it happen to actually be something to do with my services to them, I would be quick to explore how to 'make things right' immediately and to their complete and total satisfaction.

How does your business give back or get involved in the community?
I cater to the philosophy that it is important to give back to the community who support your business. Ironically, I feel like I've been the one to benefit during my years of volunteer help given various organizations, among those: the Milford Chamber of Commerce (worked on several committees throughout the past 15 years), the Network of Executive Women (member/ past Board member), the Milford Rotary (volunteer at Annual Lobster Bake); the Downtown Milford Business Association (member & Executive Director); Milford's Promise (Executive Director); Boys & Girls Village (consultant); and many others who occasionally ask for support. I'm proud to have opportunity to give back and be involved in a community so rich with the spirit of volunteerism.
