at 7AM you are a little late informing famlies

Would have been nice to announce this earlier than 7:08am, and to get the word out like they usually do with robo-calls and texts. I only learned when my son called to ask why the bus hadn't come 15 minutes after it was due. I got texts overnight that the National Weather Service wind advisory was canceled, and at 6am that the winter weather advisory was canceled. I can't second-guess the decision to use yet another weather day, but they should announce earlier and better.

turn the radio on, check the school website. 8 inches of snow on the ground and you didn't think there might be at least a delay? I heard the closure on the radio at 6 AM

Hi John: I woke up at 5 a.m. and there hadn't been an announcement yet. I fell back asleep and woke up again at 7 a.m. and wrote the story. I was concerned that this hour would be too late for many people and I will likely wake up at 6 a.m. during the morning of next snow fall, as I imagine the announcement will be in by that time. Thanks for the note.

I don't know what was on the air or on the web this morning, but I know I got no text, email, or automated call, and as of mid-day the only one of the five stations that are the official sources that has Milford closed is News12. None of WFSB, WTNH, WVIT, nor WTIC have Milford in their lists. No great harm done, but there seems to be a failure in the system.

Milford announced the closing at around 5:40 a.m. on their milford ed website.

OK, thanks. As new residents we have to learn what kind of weather makes closings likely enough that I should check MifordEd.org before the high schooler goes out to wait for the bus. But this is 2012, and they have the technology and use it well, pushing messages to subscribers is a good way to go. (And of course the earlier its announced, whether it is school closings or when the power is going to come back, the better. Today they didn't know if they'd have yesterday's much-more-than-predicted snow cleared in time; last week things would have been easier if we'd known earlier not only that we'd need substitute housing for so long [rather than scramble for a motel each night] but also that the child who was out of the area didn't have to rush back to get to school.)
