Milford AP Enrollment, Test Scores Improve

Milford Public Schools are putting an increased emphasis on AP Testing and the students are responding with increased enrollment and higher test scores.

More Milford High School students are taking AP courses than ever before. In 2011, AP Course enrollment was at 268. In 2012, the number moved up to 302 and for the 2012-2013, school year, the number is at 489.

AP Test scores and statistics at Joseph A. Foran High School and Jonathan Law High School were discussed at the Board of Education meeting Monday night.

From 2008-2012, both Foran and Law have increased the number of students getting a 3 or higher on the tests (a 3 or higher being the score that most colleges accept for credit).

In 2008, 65.7% of Foran AP students scored a 3 or higher. In 2012, that number was 76.4%.

Likewise at Law, the numbers have improved from 68.0% in 2008 to 71.0% in 2012.

The number of Milford AP students who are AP Scholars has increased from 55 in 2011 to 77 in 2012. An AP Scholar is a student who scores a 3 or higher on 3 AP exams.

Milford Schools did not reach their 2012 goal of 74% of exams being a 3 or higher, rather being at 70.5%, but they obliterated their goal of 293 students enrolled in AP courses in 2013 with the 489 number.

Attempts to reach Assistant Superintendent Michael Cummings and Board of Education Chairwoman Tracy Casey for this article were unsuccessful.
