Therapy Dogs Who Comforted Jonathan Law Students Honored

The therapy dogs comforted student after classmate Maren Sanchez was killed.

The Board of Aldermen meeting Monday night was one for the dogs, literally.

The aldermen honored a group of therapy dogs, who comforted Jonathan Law High School students and staff in the hours and days following the April 25 killing of Junior Class President Maren Sanchez, 16.

Among those honored included Spartacus, Cooper, Muffin, Socrates, and Dascha.

A proclamation was read in their honor and of course dog treats were handed out liberally, the New Haven Register reports.

“You have made this very difficult process a lot better,” Law principal Fran Thompson told the handlers and dogs, according to the Register. “You helped us through our darkest days.”

Many of the same therapy dogs responded to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. The therapy dogs at Law was made possible by Newtown Kindness, which was founded and named in memory of victim, Charlotte Bacon, 6. Charlotte loved animals. Her mother was present at Monday's aldermen meeting.
