Blake Picks Retired Officer as Milford's Assistant Mayor

Milford Mayor appoints Steven Fournier as his assistant. Do you think that's a good choice?

Mayor Benjamin Blake announced the appointment of retired police officer Steven Fournier to the position of assistant mayor.

"What I looked for in filling this position was someone who possesses the highest degree of professionalism, someone who knows his way around Milford and truly understands our community’s people, streets and neighborhoods. Steve fits the bill. He is highly regarded throughout our community and I believe he will represent my administration and our city well in this position," Blake said. "Milford is fortunate to have Steve on board."

Fournier commented “I have a lifelong commitment to Milford and I look forward to continuing my public service in this community and working for the City for which I care so much.”

Fournier retired earlier this year after a successful 34-year career with the Milford Police Department. He served the past six years on the force as deputy chief. He attended Milford schools and served in the U.S Air Force. Fournier holds several undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of New Haven including a BS in Criminal Justice, a BS in Financial Accounting, an MS in Forensic Science and an MBA in Finance.

I can not think of a Finer Man for the position. I have know and spent a good amount of time with Steve and have found him to be a very honest and well educated man

I am pleased to hear this--for the new Mayor, "Deputy Chief" Fournier and Milford!!
Lynne McNamee December 07, 2011 at 12:28 PM
There is no such position as "Assistant Mayor" in Milford. The correct position title and understanding of the role is "Assistant TO THE Mayor." If you rememeber back to when Mr. Frank was offering this position to a candidate willing to make a deal with him, this distinction was brought up then. I would hope this is just a mistake in reporting...it would be a serious overreach of power, in my opinion, for any mayor to create a new position with the implied authority an "Assistant Mayor" would have, especially without it going beofre the Aldermen (at least) and the people (preferably). The position, as I understand it, has not been an assistant mayor. This change should not be allowed to slip by unnoticed.

Lynne - there's no new position created here. Steve fills the role that Lisa Bull held and John O'Connell before her and so on. You really need to switch to decaf. Great choice Ben!

Rich..you need to put your coffee cup down and read the article. It clearly says "Assistant Mayor"....Lynne is pointing that out. I agree that Ben has made a good choice in naming Steve Fournier as "Assistant to the Mayor" and wish him luck.

I believe the new Mayor has the right to select those he trusts to be his advisors and that includes the Chairman of the Democratic Town Committee. I do wish Mr. Fournier must success in his new endeavor as "Assistant to the Mayor" as he can only be a benefit to Milford.

commenting to marie capiris, while lynne starts out asking if this might be an error in reporting, she quickly switches gears and very clearly implies she thinks mayor blake could be attempting to pull a fast one. rich smith's comment is justified.

Dear JE, Ms MacNamee' words are clear to all to read. We don't need yor political spin to make an issue where none exists. Unless you know that the job title is other than "Assistant to the Mayor" your comments were unnecessary. As for the later part of her posting, I think she has the right to express an opinion as to what the present laws require to change a job title. I'm willing to bury the hachet, are you?

I don't believe my comment was addressed to you Ronald Goldwyn.

Mayor Blake could not have chosen a better person to be his executive aide than Steve Fournier, he is an excellent choice. This is a win win situation for everyone involved. Steve is a great communicator and a real peoples person. Good luck Steve..

The comment from Susan Spalthoff is really from me, Peter Spalthoff. It just showed up on my wifes site. Sorry about that. However, I know she feels the same way about Steve as I do.
RONALD M GOLDWYN December 08, 2011 at 05:30 AM
You are correct, your comments are to anyone reading them and no one person. Which war are you now fighting?

I recall a song about a man named Sue. How do you do.
