Fact-Checking the Democratic Senate Debate

Daily news and updates from the campaign trail in Connecticut.

Senate

Democrats vying for the U.S. Senate nomination debated in Bridgeport on Sunday, and the Hartford Courant fact checked the statements by Chris Murphy and Susan Bysiewicz. Both the candidates appeared to be mistaken on some facts.

Third District

Rosa DeLauro (D) advocated for increased spending in government’s public health agencies in order to ensure food safety. Recently, Cargill’s ground beef was recalled due to salmonella.

“The weaknesses in our food safety system have once again become abundantly clear.  These illnesses were in the first two weeks of June and yet this product is just now being recalled.  Our food safety system has to get the resources it needs to keep Americans from being sickened by bacteria like salmonella in the first place.

Wayne Winsley (R) had a press conference in New Haven on Thursday to criticize Rosa DeLauro’s consideration of a federal soda tax.
