Update: Officials ID Fatality in Milford House Fire

Man was pronounced dead at the scene, fire officials said.

A 71-year-old man has been identified as the victim in a fatal fire on Summit Avenue Tuesday afternoon that sent neighbors scrambling to douse the flames with garden hoses before fire officials arrived.

Alex Szabados was pronounced dead at the scene after he was discovered in the bathroom at 63 Summit Ave., Capt. Kyle Brotherton said in a release.

Fire emergency medical technicians removed the body from the structure and began an attempt to resuscitate the man but rescue efforts were terminated “due to the severity of burns,” Brotherton said.

The majority of the fire, called into police at 4:22 p.m., was extinguished within minutes of firefighters’ arrival, Brotherton said.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined as the Milford fire marshal’s office and the Connecticut State Police fire marshal’s office continue to investigate.
