Tinted Windows Draw Concerns in Milford

Are you seeing more vehicles on the roads in Milford with tinted windows? Well Aldermanic Chairman Philip Vetro says he has, and he’s received numerous calls from concerned residents about it. 

The issue was broached at a June Board of Police Commissioners meeting. 

According to meeting minutes, Vetro said, after residents called with concerns he personally began to notice the numerous vehicles with tinted windows. He stated that it must be difficult for police officers to have the ability to see inside the vehicle. 

Police Chief Keith Mello, according to meeting minutes, said there is a law against tinted windows but he added it is necessary for an officer to have a tint meter in order to enforce that law. The chief said it’s difficult for the department to enforce the law. 

He explained that back in the early ‘80’s there were two men who stole a car, drove to New Haven and kidnapped a woman, sexually assaulted that woman and while driving through Milford an officer stopped them asking they put their lights on when the car took off and led officers on a speedy chase into Bridgeport where they were once again stopped and the woman in the car screamed alerting the officers, meeting minutes state. 

The two men were arrested and subsequently the officers expressed their concern about the tinted windows. He noted that former Lt. Graham developed a bill which eventually was passed into law and that law still exists but it still remains difficult to enforce without a light meter, Mello said.
