Milford Police: Distraction-Style Burglary

Offering to do yard work, a suspect gained entry to an elderly woman's house and stole money from her while she was upstairs getting cash for his children, who had allegedly been through a hardship.

 

received a complaint of a distraction-style burglary at a Rogers Ave. residency on Monday, May 28th. The suspect left the elderly resident's home with an undisclosed amount of money.  

At 10 a.m., a man knocked on the door of the residence and offered to do yard work for the resident, which she agreed to. The suspect asked the resident for a power chord extension he could use while doing the yard work.

After the resident told him she did not have one, the suspect asked the resident for money due to a hardship involving his children. The resident went upstairs to get money for the suspect while he used her bathroom.  

The resident then noticed that the male had exited a room where she had money kept and ran out of the home. The suspect left the area operating a black four door vehicle bearing a beige license plate with black characters on it.

The suspect is described as a black male, approximately 60 years of age, bald, wearing a light colored hat with a brim and brown clothes.

Tips to avoid becoming a victim to a distraction burglary:

  • Keep your doors locked. 
  • Do not allow unsolicited visitors into your home. 
  • Acknowledge you are home without opening the door. Make sure they know that someone is home.
  • Verify the visit to your home by calling a company directly with contact information you have obtained on your own, not what is provided by the visitor.
  • Contact your police department regarding any suspicious activities.
