Two People Shot Dead in Milford Wednesday Afternoon (updated 7:50 p.m.)

Gunman opens fire on Milford police officers

It was a violent and deadly day in Milford as two men died in an apparent murder-suicide, but not before the gunman opened fire on city police officers, police said in a press release.

Police said they responded to 16 Midway Avenue around 12:45 p.m. Wednesday after receiving numerous phone calls that a gun had been fired.

When police arrived they found Michael Savignano, 56 of an uncertain address, with chest injuries sustained from a gun shot wound, police said.

While officers were attending to Savignano they saw Vincent Edwards, 48 of 16 Midway Avenue, walking on the street with a handgun.

Edwards then went into his house and climbed a ladder to the roof, police said.

“While on the roof, Edwards pointed the firearm in the direction of the officers,” police spokesman Officer Jeffrey Nielsen said in a press release. “As the officers began to retreat to an area of safety, Edwards discharged the firearm. Moments later, Edwards discharged the weapon a second time. Police located Edwards on the roof with a self-inflicted gunshot wound where he was pronounced deceased.”

Milford police did not fire on Edwards, police said.

Savignano was transported to a local hospital and was later pronounced dead, police said. Police found a firearm at the scene. Investigators believe the two males were acquainted with each other, police said.

Police are on scene and continuing with the investigation. Jonathan Law High School was briefly placed on lockdown because it is in close proximity to the shooting.
