A Milford man was charged Thursday for his alleged role in the theft of a David Hasselhoff sign at a Shelton Cumberland Farms in August.

Adam Holter is accused of hitting a gas station clerk with his SUV as the employee was trying to stop thieves from stealing the Hasselhoff sign that was promoting the store's iced coffee.

The 19-year-old Holter turned himself in to police and faces charges of second-degree assault and reckless endangerment.

Police said thieves in the SUV tried to steal the sign early in the morning on Aug. 20. When the clerk tried to intervene, the vehicle hit him, police said.

The clerk, who suffered serious injuries, is still recovering, according to Shelton police Lt. Robert Kozlowsky. He had been in critical condition but was recently released from Bridgeport Hospital, a spokesperson there said.

Shortly after the incident, David Hasselhoff himself tweeted that he was praying for the clerk: "I am shocked & truly saddened about the Cumberland farms store clerk tragedy My heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with him and his family!"

In August, USA Today, citing Associated Press sources, reported that more than 500 of the Hasselhoff signs had been stolen in several states over the summer.

Holter was released on $10,000 bond and is due to appear in Derby Superior Court Oct. 24.

No other arrests are expected in this case, police said.
