Milford Fire Department Warns of Upcoming Hurricane Season

With Super Storm Sandy still a recent memory, it is important that citizens begin preparations for the 2013 Atlantic Hurricane Season, which starts June 1st and runs through September.

The Milford Emergency Management Office and the Office of the Mayor would like to offer the following information and advice to ensure that you are ready in case severe weather strikes.

One of the most important things you can do to prepare for an emergency is to create an emergency supply kit. It should include things like a first aid kit, bottled water, nonperishable food, a manual can opener, plastic utensils, and paper plates. You should also have a battery-powered radio, flashlight, and cell phone along with replacement batteries and chargers.

Do not forget to include things you will need after the storm passes such as cleaning supplies, copies of important documents, and pictures of your family and pets in case you need help looking for them. Update your completed kit once every few months. Make sure to take your family’s unique needs into consideration when you create your hurricane plan and Emergency Supply Kit.

If you have small children in your family, remember to include things like formula, diapers, and bottles. Toys and books will keep children from becoming restless during an emergency and may help them remain calm. Consider purchasing a generator and extension cord to power equipment in case the power is lost.

If you take prescription medicines, keep copies of your prescriptions in your Emergency Supply Kit and plan to refill them before the storm. Wear a medical alert tag or bracelet and keep a card in your wallet and in your Kit that outlines your medical needs.
