Milford Fire Captain Saves 10-Month-Old Child

Captain Holinko acted quickly at the Westfield Mall Carnival last Friday.

Appeared Not to Be Breathing

On June 1, 2012 while working a fire safety standby position, Captain Nicholas Holinko was suddenly alerted to a medical emergency at the Carnival.

While checking his basic medical equipment at the beginning of his shift, a mother carrying her limp 10 month old girl thrust the child into Captain Holinko’s arms.

Captain Holinko performed a brief primary assessment and determined that the child was not breathing and did not have a patent airway.  He immediately began to perform black blows on the child and a penny was coughed up and out of the airway by the child.

Following the Penny

After the removal of the foreign body, he began to stimulate the child to produce crying and after several moments the child began to act normally.

The child was evaluated by Paramedics and transport to a hospital was refused by the child’s mother.

If it had not been for Captain Holinko’s quick reactions, the result would have been tragic.
