San Marzano Tomatoes

San Marzanos are a type of plum tomato, originally grown and canned in the Valle del Sarno region of Italy. Compared to their cousin, the Roma, San Marzanos have a thicker flesh with a stronger, sweeter and less acidic taste. They are loved by many foodies and great chefs for their flavor consistency. The true DOP (protected designation of origin) certified San Marzano tomato is grown in Italy in accordance with Italian law under strict guidelines for optimal growing and harvesting. Not all San Marzanos are certified, but those that are clearly rank among the best. As a true foodie, I can share with you that these tomatoes cost more but the return in flavor is worth every penny!
