September is National Literacy Month
The Literacy Center of Milford is holding a student and tutor recognition night. Beginnings 2013: Student Essays and a Celebration of Accomplishments will be on Wednesday, September 26 at 7:00 P.M. at City Hall, River Street. English as a second language students will have an opportunity to read their stories. For some it will be the first time reading English in public. The Junior Woman’s Club of Milford hosts the event.
We will be celebrating several students and tutor accomplishments, Ted Green passed his GED in November and Smita Jog got a new a job at Wells Fargo Bank in February.
Milford teacher Julie Eppoliti has been selected to receive the Callahan-Holzwarth Award. Julie works at Harborside Middle School and was nominated by her principal Steve Gotleib. This memorial was started to honor one of our volunteers who was a tutor and also one of our office staff. She died suddenly in 2001. Betsy Callahan-Holzwarth was very active promoting reading to children and participated at her daughter’s school in that activity. The PTA had honored her with the Parent of the Year Award.

We will also be honoring Laura Loesch and Florence Gambino with our volunteer award. Laura started working as an office volunteer in 2011. She quickly learned many tasks and helps with the day to day operations of the Center. Laura has helped with the volunteer night, wine tasting event, Leprechaun Leap, Live to Learn Ride as so much more. Although her time with the Literacy Center has been short, her talents and contributions are huge.
Florence Gambino came to the Literacy Center in 2002 to become an ESL tutor. She has tutored 15 people and held a small class at Meadowside School. Florence works in the office on Wednesdays and helps with the Books for Birthdays program. Florence has been on several committees working on numerous fundraisers too. Last year she cooked a special Italian dish and shared it at our Annual International Wine Tasting Event. She is one of a kind and we are lucky to have her!

“Given that September is National Literacy Awareness Month,” said Executive Director, Tami Jackson, “it seemed appropriate to hold this event and honor the accomplishments our students have achieved. We are also beginning another tutor training class on September 25. September is a busy time for us and we are excited to stress literacy awareness, but every month is literacy month as far as we are concerned.”
