Union endorsements may be important and may reflect the
sentiments of a particular group – they may, that is, if the endorsement vote
truly includes the voices of all or most of that union’s membership.  When Peter Spalthoff goes to an
under-attended union meeting, gives his pitch and then pushes for an immediate
vote to endorse him, the results of that vote only reflect the immediate and
emotional response of those who heard his pitch. A small percentage of the
union membership acting like a cheering squad does not necessarily reflect what
might have been the outcome of a full-membership vote based on history and
achievements and thoughtful consideration.

Also, it seems to me that practically daily the Milford
Patch has a headline about Peter Spalthoff and his campaign, while writing very
little about what Mayor Ben Blake is doing – not regarding the mayoral race,
but regarding his ongoing and tireless work directing city agencies, honing
budgets, still helping victims of Storm Sandy, etc.  While Spalthoff is bad-mouthing Blake in his
attempt to get elected, Mayor Blake is focusing on the needs of our city.  How about reporting that?
