What would Milford be without Charles Island?

On March 17, 1657 Charles Deal purchased Poquehaug or Milford Island for the purpose of raising tobacco. Although the venture was a failure, the island was dubbed Charles Island.

In 1711 Samuel Eels bought Charles Island.

In 1835 Charles Island was sold to Major John Harris, Esq of New York for $800. He erected a summer home on the island and spent $14,000 grading and landscaping the island.
If you want to learn more about Charles Island,  An Historical Account of Charles Island Milford Connecticut by Michael C. Dooling is a fascinating source of information.
