It Happened In Milford Week 10

IT HAPPENED IN MILFORD By Jean Tsang and David Gregory Submitted by the 375th Committee

On October 17, 1789 George Washington penned a description of Milford in his diary. “In this place there is but one church, or in other words but one steeple, but there are Grist and Saw Mills, and there is a handsome Cascade over the tumbling dams.”

In 1852 the Revolutionary War Memorial commemorating Stephen Stow and the 46 soldiers who died of smallpox was erected in Milford Cemetery. The monument stands 35 feet high and consists of two pieces of Portland brownstone.

In 1951 churches pressured the police to enforce Blue Laws arresting any merchants open on Sunday. This law had not been enforced since 1938.
