The Heart and Soul of Downtown Milford: Jim Wilson

Jim Wilson loves what he does! Milford Photo is the go to store for anything and everything related to photography. But it is so much more than photography.

Jim Wilson loves what he does! Jim owns , the premier Digital Photography Shop in Connecticut. Milford Photo is the go to store for anything and everything related to photography. But it is so much more than photography.

As I sat down to talk with Jim, I realized that this man exemplifies the heartbeat of our town.  He is constantly looking to the future, seeking out the latest technology, keeping his staff well trained and completely focused on the most important aspect of his business, YOU!

Jim Wilson is a firm believer in bringing people together in this digital age. According to Jim there is so much technology out there that people don’t have to personally connect anymore. It is part of human nature to want to be with other people and to participate in meaningful ways.

He brings people together with their common love of the art of photography through classes, photography walks, fun events and group lessons. He creates the opportunity for people share their love of photography with each other in a meaningful, personal way. Something that tends to get lost in this digital world we live in.

Jim first started working in the camera industry in high school.  He was an athlete at heart but he started working at a local camera shop because the gentleman who owned the shop strongly encouraged him to do so.  And that was it for Jim.  Photography became a part of him and he never stopped.  After attending Southern Connecticut State University, he continued working at the camera shop. Finally, in 1995 Jim had the opportunity to create Milford Photo.

In 2000 he purchased the property on River Street where Milford Photo currently resides. He sunk his heart and soul into the place, doing a lot of the renovations himself.  His wife Linda stood by his side, giving him encouragement and her blessing. Shortly after he opened the store, the entire photography industry shifted from film to digital.

Jim, always a future thinker, realized that he had a golden opportunity to upgrade his equipment for the new digital age. It was wise decision that paid off.  Jim continues to look to the future, changing product lines and types of services so he can better serve his customers.

As , Jim generously volunteers his time with and for the Milford community and local non-profits.  He sits on the boards of the Downtown Milford Business Association, Milford Progress Inc. and is a member of Milford Rotary. Jim was honored as Business Person of the Year by the Milford Chamber of Commerce in 2001 and Milford Photo was chosen as Small Business of the Year in 2010.

As I mentioned in my first article, the heart and soul of downtown are the people.  People who are willing to serve their community, have strong work ethics, believe in volunteerism and are committed to a vibrant downtown. Thank you Jim, for all you do!

Next time I sit down with Joe and Cindy Agro.
