Which Social Sites are Right for Your Business?

There are countless social networking sites which you can use for your small business. In this article, I break some of them down for you to help you choose the right ones for your marketing campaign!

In my last couple of posts on this site, I've covered the importance of social media marketing for small business, as well as how it can be used to build trust. But where exactly should your business be in the world social media?

If you're reading this article, you probably know that there are a ton of social networking platforms. When starting a social media marketing campaign, many business owners are overwhelmed by the amount of options. It's hard to figure out where you need to be in order to reach your target market. That's why I've decided to make a short, simple list of the most popular social media sites with a breakdown of uses and stats for each!

Facebook

  • Over 1 billion users - your target market is likely included
  • Allows paid advertising
  • User base is around 60% female
  • Great for interacting with customers, sharing updates and pictures, and hosting promotions

Twitter

  • Over half a million users - 57% female
  • Allows you to post quick, 140 character blurbs called 'tweets'
  • You can also share pictures, as well as links to landing pages
  • One of the most effective ways to generate B2B leads, but also perfect for interacting with customers

 

Linkedin

  • Over 175 million users, around 55% female user base
  • Great for networking on a professional level - excellent B2B resource
  • Allows you to connect with industry experts, business owners, employees, etc.
  • You can also post job opportunities you may have within your company

Google+

  • Around 400 million users, 70% male
  • Similar to Facebook in usage, but with Google's spin
  • Allows you to integrate other Google accounts like AdWords and Authorship to improve rankings
  • Lowest average time spent on-site by users (around 3 minutes)

 

Pinterest

  • Rapidly growing user base, primarily female (79%)
  • Users upload and 're-pin' articles and pictures to categories (called 'boards') on their profiles
  • Great for brands with excellent photographs available
  • Great for brands who primarily target women

 

YouTube

  • Over 1 billion unique users worldwide
  • Allows you to upload, watch, and comment on videos
  • Great for brands that want to share video content
  • Spread your name by uploading commercials, demos, or viral content
