The Milford Diner Update: "Moving Forward"

Susan Shaw, Board of Aldermen Member and owner of Collected Stories Bookstore, has been spearheading the Milford Diner restoration project, which is a 501c3 non-profit.

It's always difficult to come up with funding for the arts, but has been actively working to creat an arts community center at the old Milford Diner, which would display artwork, screen short and classic films, and be a place for like-minded people to spend time and discuss the arts.

We spoke with her recently about the state of the restoration project.

What is the current status of the plans for an art center at the Milford Diner?

We are moving forward; having purchased the Diner, we have, through UNH, gotten several interior designs for the Diner and we are moving toward finding additional financing for the interior renovation.  We are in the process of locating additional grant funding. Currently we have started repairing the exterior and we expect that this work will be completed very soon.

How can those that want to help out with the project be of assistance?

Is there a timeline for when the project will be completed?

We've given out a couple--and they have been off the mark.  Funding did dry up for us--though the money that we raised has been put--and is being put--to good use.  But we are still looking for the opening of the Diner at the end of this year.  However, events sponsored by the Diner will begin later this summer.

What is the Milford Diner's relationship with ? When does the land lease expire with SBC?

We have a 5 year with an renewal for an additional 5 years.  So we are firm for 10 years; than a joint option for renewal.  SBC has been a terrific partner for us and the community. One reason for opting to purchase (rather than lease) was to ensure that the community's investment was protected should circumstances change and The Diner needed to be moved.

How has the community response been to an arts center in the Milford Diner?

It's been in all ways gratifying and generous.  Even with these delays, folks have held faith with the project and we look forward to celebrating with them the opening.
