“TASTE OF THE WORLD” Is Theme  for Literacy Center of Milford’s
Wine-and-Food-Tasting Grand Finale

Oct. 1, 2013, Milford, CT – Take a sip of fine wine and a bite of tasty appetizer favorites from South Africa to Tunisia to Italy as talented ballerinas from the New England Ballet School twirl across the ballroom floor to the music of Tchaikovsky’s classic “Nutcracker Suite” at The Literacy Center of Milford’s 19th annual “Taste of the World” wine-and-food-tasting gala on Friday, October 11th.

The benefit, which includes wine-tasting and specialty appetizers prepared by the Center’s tutors, students, and local restaurants, will take place from 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM at the Westwoods Ballroom (Italian American Club) at 85 Chase Lane in West Haven.  (Just off Exit 42 on I-95.)

In addition, a live raffle will take place with gift baskets brimming with exciting items donated from local shops and individuals.

Bic Corporation, Subway, the Milford Kiwanis, and Orange Ale House will be honored for their continued support and dedication to the mission of The Literacy Center of Milford through the years.

The wine and beer tasting, and selected cordials are courtesy of Greg Davies of The Crushed Grape, and other local distributors.  The event is sponsored by The Milford Bank and many generous businesses and friends.

Attendees also will have the opportunity to meet and greet the Center’s students who use its services:  those studying for citizenship; those in need of mastering basic reading, writing, and mathematics skills, and those from other countries who want to learn or improve upon their knowledge of the English language.

“This will be our last wine-and-food-tasting fundraiser -- a venue which has served us well in gaining support from area residents and local businesses alike for nearly 20 years,” says Executive Director Tami Jackson.  “While marking the end of an era, it also marks a new beginning for the Center.”

The Center is expanding its vision with the introduction of new initiatives, which includes a recent collaborative venture with the Bridges and Middle School systems on an after-school literacy program.  The organization also is pursuing new directions in its educational program offerings to be unveiled in the year ahead.  “These are exciting and changing times for the Center and for the community in which we serve,” says Ms. Jackson.  “Our big-event annual fundraiser, too, will be changing next year into an intriguing new venue – a masquerade ball. ”

Ballerinas from the New England Ballet School & Company, who have taken center stage in providing entertainment at the wine-and-food tastings for the last 3 years , will join the Center’s President John Mager and Board of Directors, tutors, students, and sponsors in taking ‘a final bow’ to this annual fundraiser.
