'Pirates Day' Sunday, June 8, 12-5 pm

Plunder, Pirates & Gold Doubloons!

On Sunday, June 8, Public is Invited to Celebrate
Milford’s 10th Annual 'Cap'n
Kidd Treasure Hunt Pirates Day, noon to 5 p.m. rain or shine. Presented by the businesses of the Downtown Milford Business Association

Argh!

We may never know if the notorious
pirate, Captain William Kidd, buried treasure on Milford's
Charles Island
or nearby on the Thimbles, or on Block Island, or in a hidden cove in what is
now East Hampton, New York, as the history books claim.

But one thing is certain. His
reputation as a marauding high seas pirate lives on in the hearts and minds of Milford’s fine citizenry.
And this June, Kidd and his salty minions will descend on Milford shores once again! However this time,
instead of seeking a hiding place for their ill gotten goods, Kidd will visit Milford for a great cause
and in the name of hearty family fun.

On Sunday, June 8, Kidd and his crew
will take over the town’s downtown to celebrate Milford’s 10th Annual 'Cap'n Kidd Treasure Hunt Pirates Day. There will be a treasure map and streets overflowing with
pirates, and oh! There will be gold doubloons galore. Word has it Kidd even plans
to abduct Milford’s
fine mayor, The Honorable Benjamin G. Blake. But, it is all in the spirit of good
fun and we understand that with a wee bit of rum to sooth his fiery temper,
Cap’n Kidd, as he is fearfully, errr, rather, FONDLY, known by his crusty crew,
will release the good Mayor from said pirate bonds.

Meanwhile, Milford’s fine young people and their parents
are invited to go on a treasure hunt. T’is me understanding that the honorable
proprietors of Downtown Milford’s booming business community will help by
providing the clues to the location of said treasure. And oh yes, those clues
will lead to a fine bounty that has been hidden in honor of this momentous
occasion.

The cause of course, is fine Milford’s glorious 375th
anniversary and oh, what a fine day it will be. The event, which begins at about noon and lasts until 5 pm,  helps officially launch Milford’s 375th
anniversary celebrations and is sponsored by the Downtown Milford Business
Association, the 7 Seas Restaurant and WPLR 99.1 Radio.

On June 8, I can say with
good authority, treasure will be found. All you need to do is follow these steps:

First, pick up your treasure
map! Beginning at about 11:30 am (until 5 pm), there will be a distribution of
said maps and pirate booty bags at Milford Lisman Landing Marina, located just
steps away from beautiful, historic downtown Milford.

If you aren’t too afraid,
stay there a wee bit to see Cap’n Kidd and his marauding pirates sail into Milford Harbour
and descend onto Milford
shores. At 12:15, the good mayor, not knowing that he is in peril, will welcome
Kidd and his pirates to fine Milford.
Then (but hush and keep this to yourselves lest we all end up hanging by our
ankles from the main sail of Kidd’s pirate ship!) Kidd will abduct the mayor. Then
there will be a parade!

Warning! T’is best to dress
like pirates for the parade and treasure hunt lest Kidd and his crew think you
are spies for the English courts seeking to hang him for piracy of the high
seas.

Then it will be up to the
fine citizenry to use said maps to begin the hunt for hidden treasure, capture
Kidd’s plunder, save the day and send Cap’n Kidd packing back to the salty
depths. Participating businesses of the Downtown
Milford Business Association will help by giving away booty and the very clues needed
to find said treasure. All you need to do is stop by their shops.

Here’s the best part.  All who visit each of the participating businesses
(which will be marked by Pirate Flags) and get their maps stamped can turn their
maps in to the Downtown Milford Business Association’s booth on the Milford Green
by the Gazebo for a chance to win the Grand Prize of the day. This would be 50
Gold pieces and a mini-Pirate’s chest full of goodies for the winning child
participant and a Pirate’s Treasure Chest full of gift cards worth several
hundred dollars for the winning adult participant.

So, come along mateys! Join us on Sunday, June 8
for a day of celebration, fun, and pirate’s plunder that you will never forget.
I promise you, the day t’will be another one for the history books.
