The arrival of Milford’s founders will be re-enacted during the Oyster Festival on Aug. 17 at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. at the Coast Guard Station parking lot, just off Schooner Lane.
Come and "meet" Peter Prudden, William Fowler, Richard Platt, Thomas and Hannah Buckingham, and other founding families. Members of the Milford Historical Society will retrace the path of those who arrived on foot from New Haven and met up with the rest of their party in the harbor where lumber and tools were brought in by boat.
You can witness a "Twig and Turf" ceremony as the land is deeded to a small group of settlers by Ansantawae, a sachem of the Paugusset Native American tribe.
Afterward, you can watch the building of a replica of a post and beam house, the settlers’ very first shelter.
