According to Center Director Mark Ahrens, “Mathnasium is a learning center where students go year-round to boost their math skills. Here, students will find a positive, enthusiastic atmosphere providing the support and encouragement they need. We are highly specialized; we teach only math. Our program, which spans both reinforcement or enrichment, is designed for students K through 12th. Mathnasium is dedicated to teaching math in a way that makes sense to kids. The results we see are an increase in overall confidence, better school performance and a more positive attitude towards math. Members pay a monthly membership fee, and usually attend twice a week for about an hour.”

The teaching method, called the “Mathnasium Method” is what helps math make sense to kids. This method is the life’s work of Larry Martinek, Mathnasium’s Chief Instructional Officer and a teacher and educational consultant in the Los Angeles area for more than 35 years. The Mathnasium Method uses a time-tested, customized program, which stems from a personalized assessment to identify the precise areas a student needs to improve their math skills. Through this assessment, a “personalized textbook” is created which is used for instruction.  In addition, interactive manipulatives and games are utilized to build Number Sense and provide a fun and supportive environment in which children can learn and excel at math.

Mark Ahrens, Center Director/Owner is a long-time Milford resident and has been involved in youth activities from Cub Scouts to Little League baseball and recreational basketball. His family includes wife Terry, three children, five grandchildren, and two rabbits. Mark has always had a passion for math and can’t wait to help the next generation of leaders. He firmly believes that the world needs more mathematical thinkers and great problem solvers and is ecstatic to be able to provide that through the Mathnasium center.

Before embarking on his Mathnasium journey, he took his love of numbers and spent 20+ years consulting in the Consumer Packaged Goods industry helping companies use data to enhance their sales and marketing efforts.

Mark has assembled a team of highly trained instructors for the center.  Each instructor has a Math and/or Education degree and has undergone an extensive, Mathnasium specific, training program. (203) 783-1490
