Milford Democrats late Tuesday celebrated unofficial election results that showed the party holding onto their majority on the boards of aldermen and education and gaining ground on the city’s Planning and Zoning Board.

“We did very well overall,” Mayor Ben Blake, a winner himself against Republican Peter Spalthoff, said to a tightly packed crowd at Democratic Party headquarters on Bridgeport Avenue.

Official election results now confirm that Milford Democrats did in fact have a pretty good day at the polls Tuesday.

The biggest win came on the Planning and Zoning Board, where Democrats took four of five races and turned an 8-2 Republican majority into a 6-4 Democratic advantage.

In the Fourth District race, Democrat Carl Moore beat Republican Mark Bender, the chairman of the board, 1,162 to 1,145, a 17-point margin that’s eligible for a recount.

In other races, Democrats held onto their 9-6 majority on the Board of Aldermen and kept their edge on the Board of Education, though two seats were lost to Republicans so the 8-2 Democratic majority on the school board is now 6-4.

Other notes:

  • Nineteen incumbents (excluding constables) that ran for re-election won another term; six did not.
  • The closest race eligible for a recount came in the First District for Board of Aldermen. There, Democrat James Patterson received 1,251 votes to fellow Democrat Greta Stanford’s 1,250. Right now, Patterson is first in and Stanford is first out.
  • The Independent Party vote helped Republicans Brian Bier (First District Board of Aldermen), Anthony Giannattasio (also First District Board of Aldermen) and Suzanne DiBiase (Fifth District Board of Education) win their respective races.

The full results (excluding constables) follow. Winners are in bold. Incumbents are marked with an asterisk.
