Whiz Kid

Mikala Fama is an animal lover.

Mikala Fama isn't the average teen, sunbathing or surfing the summer away.

Four days a week, she rides her bike to the Milford Animal Shelter at Silver Sands State Park to help out -- and to earn valuable work experience as well as extra cash.

"She stands out--is a real go-getter and always follows tasks given," Director of Milford Animal Control Rick George said.

Mikala became a part of Animal Shelter Team through The Milford Employment and Training Program. The summer program assists teenagers in the community with finding employment to gain crucial work experience and skills to prepare for the future.

Asked why she chose to work at the animal shelter, an enthusiastic, "I love animals," was Mikala's reply.

In her free time, Mikala enjoys her three cats and puppy as well as reading magazines.

This determined honors student rides her bike to and from work four days a week. Upon her arrival, she assists with most daily chores such as dog walking, laundry, sweeping, mopping and feeding.

"I love to work and help others and I thought it would be a good experience," she said.

"I also wanted to save money for school clothes."

Mikala, who will be beginning her freshman year at Jonathan Law High School this year, plans to keep her plate full.

"I would like to be a part of the Diversity Club, Sign Language Club, basketball, drama and volleyball," she said.

Mikala aspires to become a singer or to own a restaurant in California.
