Slossberg Opposes Requiring Photo ID For Election Day Registration

Milford state representative said many eligible Connecticut voters don't have voter IDs.

State Rep. Gayle Slossberg, D-, in Hartford over the state budget, but not during a debate on a proposed bill to allow people in Connecticut to register to vote on Election Day.

CT News Junkie, a news web site that covers the state capitol, reported that Slossberg vigorously opposed a Republican amendment to the bill that would have required photo IDs.

She said between 10 to 25 percent of the eligible voters in the state don’t have photo IDs and the amendment would keep them from taking advantage of the Election Day registration provision.

The bill passed the Government Administration and Elections Committee by an 11-4 vote without the amendment.

Just because you don't agree with his hatred is no reason for his comment to be taken down. This shows how weak America has become and how censorship happens because someones feelings might get hurt. You live in you dream world of bunnies and care bears while Ed and I clean house, save the tax payer money, and welcome your thanks.
Dirk out! If he is not physically harming anyone who cares?
Angus March 27, 2012 at 05:48 pm
What a minute Ed, I thought you said you were done?
Angus March 27, 2012 at 05:58 pm
??? Sounds like you need a hug.

Ed, there is a couple of good ones out there.... just a couple. I see bums of all walks of life. They are not just once race, color, creed, etc.

Dear Ed,
You have posted to this thread more than any other individual. But you have said very little. I joined the Republican party and became a Nassau County committeeman in 1961 to aid in the election of a dear friend who eventually became the Chief Judge of the State of New York. Back then the Republican Party was Liberal and the Democrats were the Conservative group (including the Dixiecrats) Over the years (since Goldwater and Reagan) the Party tags have reversed and have T Party clique as part of the Republicans. Hear in Milford, for the most part my Republicans are not extreme but moderate conservatives. I'm the oldest Republican town committeeman and the most liberal in the MRTC. I also claim to have many friends who are part of the MDTC and enjoy that claim. Locally I prefer that the Republicans were in the majority, but the voters have given the Democrats the opportunity to show their skills. They are not my enemy, my enemy are those who do not express an opinion by not voting. So I will encourage all who are eligible to vote to register and do so. We do require photo Id cards to be shown prior to casting our ballot, so this point is moot here in CT.
CuriousOrange March 27, 2012 at 08:11 pm
The current law offers alternatives to a photo ID such as a copy of a current utility bill, etc.
RONALD M GOLDWYN March 27, 2012 at 09:08 pm
Dear Ed,
Only President Reagan was called Ronnie and then only by his wife. You do not have my permission to call me Ronnie, use Mr. Goldwyn. As for Mr. Ed, after all is said and done, you keep on talking. As for Mike Brown, in the heat of a politcal battle, he will defend every action by a democrat, And I may do the same as a Republican. But I think for myself and many times I may agree with what some Democrat may say and disagree with some Republican viewpoints. May the Lord grant you long life so that you may see the error of your taunts.

Hey, who needs photo ID's? Voting is the only democratically viewed choice where an individual can paticipate without a photo ID. It makes perfect sense to push that legislation through if you want the possibility of voter fraud to exist. Try applying for social security benefits without a photo ID. Try applying for unemployment benefits or food stamps or any other government sanctioned entity. Good luck getting on an air plane or even cashing a check. It is an absurd way of telling someone who is to lazy to go to the DMV to get a picture taken, that they can do what ever they want so long as they vote for the liberal during the election. Just another loop hole for corruption!
Michael Brown March 27, 2012 at 10:29 pm
There is a possibility of all kinds of fraud in all of our daily life. There are also laws against fraud, with fines and prison terms. Claim you are someone whom you are not and go to jail. What kind of fool is going to walk into a polling place and claim they are someone they are not? That fool runs the risk of 5 years in prison if the official checker recognizes the name and knows the person being impersonated. And if they get away with it, we are talking about ONE VOTE. Although every vote is important, very very very few elections are turned by just one vote.
That said. Let's get our friends and neighbors registered to vote. Let's talk about the issues and let people make up there minds about how to vote. Let's find ways to help people vote and let's stop creating barriers to vote.
Michael Brown March 28, 2012 at 11:53 am
Ed. Your case for a national I.D. is the most rational thing you have said so far, but I still disagree with you (and not because of the "mind of a child comment"). How about a retina scan or DNA sequence of every person in the country. Then we could really get some control of the population (read sarcasm).
Let's face it. When it comes to voting, I am who I say I am. You can challenge my vote if you believe me to be a fraud or if you think I no longer live in the precinct I say I'm living in. I've seen the latter happen And yes, I have formally challenged the vote. And it has mostly been Republicans committing the offense. It is true that "dead people" do appear to cast a vote in elections. The numbers are not large, and in almost all cases it is not fraud, but rather human error. Usually the unofficial checker crosses off the wrong name; the daughter instead of the mother, someone on the line above or below the actual voter.

Also. You Republicans really don't like Chicago, do you. I assure you it is a lovely place. I was there yesterday for business. I used to live there. Very pretty. Very clean. Wonderful people. You may be referring to the Mayor Richard J. Daley Sr. days. There was a 'Daily Machine' and their was fraud. Chicago is a Democratic town, and it still more likely than not that a Democrat would get elected over a Republican, with or without fraud. The real 'Machine' stuff happens between Democrats - who gets to run for office. Even Barack Obama got edged out be a 'machine' candidate the first time he tried to run for State Senate. The Republicans in Chicago have a 'machine' too, but the gears are broken.
RONALD M GOLDWYN March 28, 2012 at 12:22 pm
Mike, My grandfather a NYC judge got his job via the Tammany Hall Machine. Harry S Truman received his first political job via the Prendergast Machine, and I in Nassau County NY was part of a political machine with instructions coming from the top down.
But my duty as a committeeman required that I walk my district and obtain enough signatures to place every candidate on the ballot from the President of the USA down to the dog catcher. For local govt. employees this was a must to retain their job. Countywide employees had to kickback 10% of their paycheck and a number of top politicians went to jail for this sceme.

Ron. Do tell. What is the price of tea in China?
Alex March 28, 2012 at 03:06 pm
You undermine your own argument when you point out that there are no prosecutions for voter fraud...it is simply not a crime that people are trying to commit.
Single ballots almost never change the outcome of an election...why would anyone risk a fine on the off chance that an election ended up tied?
Don Sherman March 28, 2012 at 03:15 pm
This reply is for "Ed":
I get it now. You are one of those trolls on Joelle's payroll, aren't you? Yeah, yeah, the Republicans are all evil, they're responsible for every bad thing in your life... We get it, "Ed". I'm curious: Do you vote?
Lynn Viesti Berube March 28, 2012 at 09:09 pm
I have been looking for the statistic quoted since yesterday because it is so hard to believe. How could up to a quarter of legal citizens in any state have no ID? Does anyone really believe 25% of CT residents don't work, collect public assistance, buy beer or cigarettes, travel, write or cash checks, have a bank account, etc.? What are the chances anyone so removed from society would go out and vote anyway?
Lynn Viesti Berube March 28, 2012 at 09:13 pm
I wish people were as concerned with disenfranchising our military.
Michael Brown March 29, 2012 at 12:43 pm
Your bottom paragraph or mine?
MJ March 29, 2012 at 02:25 pm
Quite a spirited debate here...too many hateful comments by both Republicans and Democrats. Very disappointing. True Americans should welcome all to our country as long as they come here legally as many of our ancestors did when they arrived at Ellis Island. (properly registering on the ship's manifest and upon arrival) Seriously, it is 2012 and a photo ID should be required and if one is legally eligible to vote. If the legally eligible voter cannot afford one, then the State can provide it for free. Simple. End the debate.
MJ March 29, 2012 at 02:27 pm
BTW, I voted for Gayle Slossberg, but not next time.
Michael Brown March 29, 2012 at 02:41 pm
What a "hateful" thing to say.
Lynn Viesti Berube March 29, 2012 at 02:45 pm
Not getting it.....how is anything MJ is saying hateful?
Lynne McNamee March 29, 2012 at 03:21 pm
How about a practical answer that addresses both sides. We make a commitment to having photo IDs to vote. At the polls, photo booths are set up. People have their picture taken holding their sworn and signed affidavit. This, like driver's licenses, is put into a database with photo recognition software. The individual is provided with a photo id as they leave, which is produced on the spot. 1) person now has a photo id they can use for all these other purposes 2) a photo id is not available for future elections 3) everyone whom votes is back in the system to only be able to vote once, addressing a portion of the fraud issue. Both sides get what they want. Rather than fighting against each other and digging in heels, can we take a step back and try to come up with solutions that address the concerns of BOTH sides?
MJ March 29, 2012 at 03:39 pm
Thank you Lynne McNamee - 107 posts and finally someone provides a REAL SOLUTION!!! Also agree with you - " Both sides get what they want. Rather than fighting against each other and digging in heels, can we take a step back and try to come up with solutions that address the concerns of BOTH sides?"
Lynn Viesti Berube March 29, 2012 at 03:55 pm
Lynne, nice thought but it wouldn't work. I can already hear the civil rights attorneys saying they are disenfranchised because it would take so long to vote and complete an affidavit and have their photo taken. They are very busy not driving, working, travelling, etc. you know!
CuriousOrange March 29, 2012 at 04:05 pm
Consider the downside. Anyone who supports another database that can be used to abuse personal privacy has not read 1984. Nobody wants their name in the 'justice system.' For similar reasons, not everyone wants their face on Facebook. Not everyone has a checking account, a social security number, driver's license, etc.
Michael Brown March 29, 2012 at 05:38 pm
Lynn. What an ingenious fix for a voter fraud problem that isn't really a problem.
Abe Froeman March 29, 2012 at 06:23 pm
Ed
6:42 pm on Tuesday, March 27, 2012 "Michael, you either have the mind of a child, or you are laughing at what you are saying behind our backs." Be careful what you say to Michael, he likes his attorney and threatens to sue all the time.
Michael Brown March 29, 2012 at 07:14 pm
I have never sued anyone in my entire life, but I do know slander when I hear it. 'Ed' made slanderous remarks and actually said, "sue me." I asked him to post his full name and address so he can be rightly sued; not by me, but rather by the person he slandered.

The remark you made has been taken down by the Patch editor. I of course do not want to revive your disgusting comments.

To clarify, they have 4 cats, and they're only able to take two of them, plus their 14 year old dog.Read More It was a struggle for them to even find a way to get the dog in the rental agreement, otherwise they would have tried to take them. :(

Sad that they had to leave these beauties behind. I'm sure they are heartbroken over it.

Please contact Forgotten Felines in Clinton. They are a no kill cat shelter. Offering "free toRead More a good home" pets is dangerous. There are bad people out there who take them and sell them to research labs or use them as bait in dog fighting. Please rethink this ad.
