Major Lane Shifts Coming to I-95 in Milford

As construction progresses on the bridge that spans the Housatonic River between Milford and Stratford, the DOT announces road closures. Here are the details.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT) is announcing that two major traffic shifts are scheduled in the coming weeks to realign Interstate 95 north and southbound travel lanes to allow for the demolition of the existing northbound lanes of the Moses Wheeler Bridge in Milford and Stratford.

Lane Shifts Start This Week

The traffic shifts will be completed in phases. The first phase, relocating the three southbound travel lanes, is scheduled for the night of Wednesday, Jan. 16.

Southbound traffic will be shifted to the right onto a portion of the completed new superstructure. One lane of traffic will be closed at 7 p.m. so that preliminary work can begin on the realignment efforts, which include resetting the concrete barrier, adjusting signing and applying pavement markings. The shift will be completed by 6 a.m. the next morning in time for morning rush hour.

The second shift is currently scheduled for approximately two weeks later, on Monday, Jan. 28.

Northbound traffic will be shifted left onto the section of bridge previously occupied by the southbound traffic. This shift will allow for the next stage of construction, which includes demolition of the existing northbound travel lanes and construction of the next section of superstructure.

Project Details

The Moses Wheeler Bridge Replacement Project has two major phases: the Foundations Project and the Superstructure Project.

Work was completed on the $60.5 million Foundations Project on time in November 2011. The remaining work is expected to be done in 2016.

According to the DOT, "When the projects are completed, the Moses Wheeler Bridge, carrying I-95 traffic over the Housatonic River, will include three travel lanes in each direction with full shoulders conforming to current design standards. The existing bridge was put into service in 1958 and currently handles 130,000 vehicles a day."

The project consists of the reconstruction of I-95 in both directions from the overpass for Route 130 near Exit 33 (Ferry Boulevard/Route 1) and Exit 34 (Bridgeport Avenue Route 1) in the towns of Stratford and Milford.

The work includes the replacement of the of the Moses Wheeler Bridge over the Housatonic River and the I-95 bridges over Barnum Avenue Connector, East Main Street/U.S. Route 1 and Naugatuck Avenue. Local/state roads that will be directly affected by construction activities include Barnum Avenue Cut-Off, East Main Street/U.S. Route 1, Dock Drive No. 1, located in the Dock Shopping Center, and Naugatuck Avenue.

Other Important Traffic Info

  • The legal speed limit is 45 mph between exits 33 and 34 on I-95
  • In the affected area, I-95 lane widths are reduced to 11 feet during construction
