Walnut Beach is Back

What's new about Walnut Beach area of Milford?

As a resident of Walnut Beach and owner of the newly open "Scoot & Paddle" I have a great interest in the revitalization of the area and I am proud to open my business here.

Walnut Beach is an up and coming area but by no means new.  To borrow from the popular book "Sand in Our Shoes," Myrtle Beach, Milford, a seashore, an amusement park, a vacation resort, a business community."  Myrtle Beach, now known as Walnut Beach, saw a building boom with the construction of an electric trolley in 1898.  Vacation homes, hotels, cottages, restaurants, businesses and an amusement park at the beach filled the community.  Unfortunately, through the years, homes were left unoccupied, businesses closed and the area fell to disrepair.  In recent years much work has been put into the area to restore the Walnut Beach section of Milford.  Most recognized is the gorgeous boardwalk the was constructed extending the Silver Sand's boardwalk all the way down to the Walnut public beach parking lot creating a mile long boardwalk with stunning views of Long Island sound.

Down the road at the farthest end of Milford you will find the Audubon Coastal Center and estuary where rare and endangered birds call home.  Bird lovers and nature lovers come from miles around to view our nesting ospreys, egrets, piping plovers, herons and an occasional bald eagle.  Many fisherman enjoy area fishing and there is not finer place to watch the sunset.  In addition, the center is home to turtles, snakes, a salt water tank, lizards, bugs and a whole lot of information on what can be found in the surrounding area for those who look closely.

The Milford Fine Arts Council runs "Firehouse Gallery" in the repurposed firehouse in Walnut Beach and there is "Sobobo Gallery," "Wild Expressions," and the new "Beach Gallery."  There are monthly art strolls with featured artist receptions, live music, wine tasting and Salsa parties in the street!

The Walnut Beach Association offers free live concerts every weekend of the summer under the pavilion and people come from all over to spend their days at the beach and enjoy great bands as the sun sets and the music rocks on.

Not to be forgotten are some of the best eateries in the state.  The Walnut Beach Creamery is homemade, top quality ice-cream with unique flavors, each one better than the last.  Taste & See Cupcakes specialize in large, fresh, delightful cupcakes.  The Lazy Lobster is home to one of the best lobster rolls, ribby roll, clams and more.

Recently, hundreds turned out for the Milford Living Annual Kite Fly at Walnut Beach and in the summer we have the famous sand castle competition as well as Pumpkins on the Pier, Arts and Crafts festival and more.

I am very pround and excited to be part of the revitalization of Walnut Beach and hope that my contribution to the area will benefit those around me as well as friends, neighbors, tourists and vacationers alike.

There is a noticeable change of atmosphere in the area and the buzz about town is that Walnut Beach is back.
