Milford Residents Decry Cumberland Farms Application

Proposal for Boston Post Road meets derision from residents.

Cumberland Farms is seeking city approval to construct a 4,500-square-foot convenience store and 10 gas pumps at 258-266 Boston Post Road.

The proposal merges two lots currently vacant and overrun with weeds. The space used to house part of Gloria’s Gardenview Shoppes and some small manufacturing.

Representatives for Cumberland Farms made their case at a public hearing Tuesday night at Milford City Hall.

They said the site would have 26 parking spaces, which is three more than the required minimum and includes the 10 at the pumps.

There would be curb cuts on West Clark Street, Plains Road and Boston Post Road, although motorists would be prohibited from turning left out of the gas station onto the main road.

According to traffic studies shared during the presentation, 35 percent of motorists are expected to enter the site by crossing traffic with a left turn off of the Boston Post Road.

That last part irked those residents who protested the application Tuesday night. All five opponents of the proposal said a Cumberland Farms at that location would make more of a mess of the intersection in front of Dunkin’ Donuts across the street.

“I couldn’t think of anything worse to put in there than a gas station,” one speaker said.

Attorney Benjamin Proto, for Cumberland Farms, said there would be “minimal traffic impact.”

Another worry voiced by residents was the congestion between the pumps. Resident John Puglisi said what the gas station is proposing is “too dense for the property.”

Proto said the 1.3-acre space is nearly triple the size of the Cumberland Farms down the road at the intersection with Cherry Street.

Puglisi countered, arguing this proposal has more pumps.
