Milford Middle School to Open Three Days Late

Superintendent Elizabeth Feser announced the delay on Friday in the following message to the school's community.

Dear East Shore Middle School Family,

As you know, East Shore Middle School is undergoing an extensive two-year addition and renovation project.

When complete, there will be a new 8-classroom wing, an expanded and improved cafeteria and kitchen, a new state-of-the-art media center, a dedicated art and music wing, safer and reconfigured bus and parent turnaround areas, new roof and windows, and more.

Although considerable work on the building took place throughout last school year and will continue this year, the great bulk of the project has taken place over the summer months. Literally, most every wall, window, floor, and ceiling has been overhauled in one way or another.

Our expectation was to open school on time. Regrettably, it was only this (Friday) afternoon that the building contractor reported to us that the City of Milford and Fire Marshal have cleared the building for occupancy.

The contractor has now turned the building back over to us, which will allow Milford Public Schools facilities’ and maintenance employees to begin cleaning and preparing the building to receive teachers and students.

Realistically, however, there is insufficient time to accomplish all that needs to be done to ensure a safe and orderly return to school next week.

We, therefore, will delay the opening of East Shore Middle School until Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013. This delay will pertain to East Shore Middle School students only. The rest of the district will begin school as scheduled on Wednesday, Aug. 28.

The delay will require that the school year for East Shore students be extended by 3 days which means that, if there are no weather related closings, the last day of school will be June 11, 2014.

I apologize for this inconvenience, but we want to insure that your children begin school in a building that is not only safe but environmentally conducive to learning. Thank you, as always, for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Elizabeth E. Feser, Ed.D.
