The Broadway Benefit in Milford

Come have a jazzy time as you support your local United Way organizations.

You won't be going home early from this benefit. Make your night out a meaningful one with a cabaret that's for a cause.

Broadway singer and United Way volunteer Kristen Huffman and her Broadway Babes will be showcasing the work of United Way and its partner agencies through song and dance at a benefit like you’ve never seen.

Huffman’s “babes” come from various Broadway shows including Kate Chapman from Mary Poppins and Les Mis, Gwendolyn Jones from Annie and Chicago, as well as other babes from the Phantom of the Opera and Jekyll and Hyde.

As former Miss Ohio and Miss America runner up, Huffman chose a platform that centered around designing events that would garner more attention for non-profit organizations.

“The idea behind this show is educating people about what the United Way is,” said Huffman. “It really is the umbrella over so many different organizations and it benefits them all. If the community is educated, then they’ll feel more compelled to support them.”

Huffman, who works on the United Way Marketing Committee, works to tailor each event according to the audience and venue, much like a Broadway show.

“I brought out a bunch of my Broadway girlfriends,” said Huffman, “the more titles you have, the more people you can get to come out and the more money you can raise. What we’re doing is educating people about these organizations through song. We’re going to have around seven different non-proftis come on stage and say who they are and we’re going to sing song about each of them.

“A lot of non-profits are stuggling and this is benefiting them all,” said Huffman.

Huffman teaches music, piano and acting at the University of Hartford, Western Connecticut State and through a private studio. She is also the new art director of the Paradigm Theatre in Stamford, CT.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and Cabaret starts at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 21 at the Lauralton Hall auditorium, 200 High Street, Milford. Tickets are $35 and include hors d’oeuvres and entertainment. A cash bar will also be available. Reserve your tickets or table by contacting the United Way of Milford at (203) 874-6791 by Jan. 16.
