'Occupy Neverland' at Yale this Weekend

There are plenty of arts-related options this weekend.

You’ve heard of Occupy Wall Street, but what about Occupy Neverland? Yale’s A Different Drum Dance Company puts on its fall show at the Off Broadway Theatre  (41 Broadway in New Haven) on Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. Tickets are $8 for the public.

The Yale Daily News, the student newspaper, gave the performance a rave review.

“Occupy Neverland,” the theme of this performance, is reflective of social woes today but also serves as a nostalgic throwback to our favorite childhood stories — from “Where’s Waldo?” to “Alice in Wonderland.” The cast successfully draws you in with their stories, emotions and grace, as they own the humble stage on which they perform.

Qunnipiac University’s production of “Seven” is playing at the Long Wharf Theatre in New Haven this weekend. The play is based on interviews with women from around the world who suffered violence and abuse but later became advocates for the women in their countries. To that end, the cast members portray real women from Nigeria, Cambodia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Northern Ireland, Russia and Guatemala.

"The piece is an extremely powerful evocation of the horrific abuse these women suffered and their strength and courage in transcending the trauma they experienced in order to help women in their countries to avoid the experiences the characters suffered,” said Crystal Brian, professor of theater at Quinnipiac who is directing the production, in a press release.
