Residents in Milford had even more to celebrate than our troops this past weekend — the town now also boasts the tallest flagpole in the state.

Before Milford’s new, 110-foot flagpole was installed last Sunday, Newtown had the tallest flagpole in Connecticut, at 100 feet, according to the News Times.

Milford’s new flagpole replaces a 99.7-foot steel pole that was erected in the ‘50s, for $5,000.

Devon Rotary Club funded the new $50,000 flagpole, which is 121 feet total including the pole depth in the ground, and not including the eagle that sits on top. That eagle had been perched on top of the previous flagpole.

The base of the old flagpole had featured the names of American soldiers killed in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.

Ray Macaluso, chairman of the Devon Rotary Club, told the News Times that these markers were reinstalled just as they’d been on the old monument.
