“The City supports the tax credit application process through our Community Development office every year,” stated Mayor Blake, “but this year the level of support from the business community was extraordinary.”

Corporations making charitable contributions through the CT Neighborhood Assistance Tax Credit program receive State Corporate Income Tax credits equaling 60% to 100% of the contribution, depending on the non-profit’s proposed program. Activities that involve energy conservation investments receive the 100% credit.

“We operate on a tight budget,” Beth-El Executive Director Toni Dolan added. “If we can reduce our energy costs, there are that many more resources to put into program services.”

The Center operates a soup kitchen and transitional housing facility in Milford.

Last year, tax credit contributions were invested in high efficiency HVAC systems for the facility. This year, the funds will be used to install a solar hot water heating system. Tax credit contributions can be made for a variety of human service and community enhancement activities.

“The last few years have been very difficult for private schools like St. Gabriel,” School Principal Dr. Gail Kingston remarked. “Funds for the capital costs and operations of the school, enables us to better meet the educational needs of every student.”

Dr. Toni Iadarola, the President at Lauralton Hall, agreed. “With a campus the size and age of Lauralton Hall, we are challenged to operate efficiently while maintaining the historic character,” she commented.

Their contribution will be invested in energy efficient lighting at their athletic center and gymnasium.

The United Illuminating Company has been an active participant in the Tax Credit program and sees it as a unique opportunity for energy conservation investments.

“As a major utility in south central Connecticut, UI has a broad based commitment to conservation and load management,” Eileen Lopez-Cordone, UI Community Development Specialist explained.

Other corporations supporting Milford agencies were Solidus, Inc.; EMCOR Group, Inc.; and Cigna Health Management.

“This was a good year for Milford,” added Mayor Blake, “but I hope our efforts to attract contributions to our Open Space Fund do better next year.”

Municipalities  can also participate in the program, and Milford sought tax credit contributions for the purchase of additional open space in the community.
