38th Annual St. Mary School Basketball Tournament is Underway

The real fun started when the players took on their parents in a series of match-ups.

One of my favorite events at is our basketball tournament. It comes at the end of a long basketball season, and is all about celebrating. We celebrate the student athletes’ hard work and their family's support.

It is truly a venue where the entire school family comes together to enjoy themselves and share that enthusiasm with the nearly 50 teams who walk through our doors. The tournament is centered on examples of good sportsmanship and a love of the game.

The 38th Annual Invitational Tournament kicked off Friday with fun day. It started with a pep rally and was followed by a basketball clinic for all PreK-2nd graders run by our 8th grade players.

Then the real fun started when the players took on their parents in a series of match ups...needless to say the students won 99% of the time!

The evening of good friends, and did I mention good food, wrapped up when our alumni came back and played against the 8th graders.

A very important part of our tourney is when The Ray Fitzpatrick Awards are given to memorialize the man who started the tournament and ran it until he passed away in 2004. It is presented to a member of each team from grades 5-8 who exemplify the spirit of sports at SMS: teamwork, dedication, sportsmanship and respect to others (traits so wonderfully exemplified by Mr. Fitzpatrick).

Congratulations to this year's winners: Robert Varnum, Clare Wetmore, Bradley Zsampar, Madeleine Lagarde, Greg Jazwinski, Olivia Creigh, Patrick Cody, Erin Eason and Krystyna Lugo.

The Tournament runs through March 18th. Honor the Game! Go Jaguars!
