Here is a more reasoned discussion of the Long Range Planning Committee proposal. http://www.milfordmirror.com/12522/school-solution-may-not-make-everyone-happy/ By the way. The Long Range Planning Committee meetings are *open to the public* and have been since last June. Plus, the Committee *has not published a report yet* and has not even finished meeting. So get a grip everyone.

The LRPC is a smokescreen...A design has been defined by the school board, Milone and MacBrown are simply providing different scenarios supporting it. This is clearly evident by documentation provided at the 11th hour; surveys which yield a skewed result; and the discussion topics during each LRPC meeting showing that our school district is attempting to transform our school into a Magnet School model. The truth is that all documentation presented to date provide NO empirical evidence that the options being presented offer any academic benefit to our kids. What it does is provide a vehicle to get state dollars. Dump the old, build new, receive funds from the state. This whole exercise smells worse than rancid milk.

Its called "feather bedding" creating a profitable project in order to feather their own nest. This has nothing to do with need. And nothing to do with the academic benifits to the students. It has everthing to do with creating a need for greed. An providing a flow of tax dollars through the unions. Over two hundred million if I am correct. Follow the money, who is pushing for this? To the parents you are the only ones looking out for your kids. Keep up the good fight. For years all we have heard from the teachers union, everytime they wanted more money, "Its for the kids". Wake up parents this only benifits the unions.

Concern Parent - I am in absolute disbelief that Milford's Education Administrators (one being the former Mayor of Milford) would actually alter or change the purpose (charge) in which the Board of Education approved the Committee’s purpose (charge). The consultant group is contracted to gather data 5-10 years forward regarding the decline in enrollment in Milford Public Schools, evaluate the school buildings and present their findings to the committee and come up with recommendations. I have watch and listen to Mrs. Casey aggressively not approve the administration changing an agreement and I would think we will hear and see this again if this is the case. Do you really think the Administration would or could hire Milone and MacBrown to manipulate and deceive the Chairman of the BOE and two other BOE members, the two Milford Aldermen, 4 school principals, two teachers, Alberta Jagoe and 13 parents? Do you think they can pull that off? Maybe the BOE voted and changed the Administration’s purpose for the Long Range Plan Committee and for them to include a Magnet School in their recommendations. But I would think that would be boarding unethical if they did vote and not allow the public to be informed on this. I did read in the minutes, Nov. 19th, which are by Dr. Feser, where Mr. Cummings was asked by one of the consultants to talk about his experience with the Bridgeport Magnet school. “He said it is very impressive. It has an open campus, aesthetically pleasing, “student center feel”, Lap-tops, wireless, wind turbine, etc. (IT, Physical Science, total State of the Art). He talked about the “competition” for our students and asked how will we respond to it”. The end of his statement sounded like a challenge for the committee. That is a bit curious that Magnet schools where not in the data or minutes until the night of the public forum and now there are no more public forums for parents, community and students to ask questions about it. I’ve been attending and watching BOE meetings for a long time and when the Administration wants to pursue or look into something such as the Security Resources Officers it required a vote of the BOE to approve the administration to research such matters. So I would think such a large project or proposal as a New Magnet School the Milford BOE would have to approve the Administration to research such matter. Do you think maybe we all missed a meeting when the Administration proposed such request and the BOE voted yes?

When does Mayor Blake speak out regarding the re-alignment of grades, all the transitions, the closing of community schools, a one high school system, magnet school, charter schools in Milford and how he feels as a parent sending his children into the Milford Public School System or are his children going to a private school?
Gary Tobin February 17, 2014 at 11:33 PM
Liz - Supporting your comment. Bill Gates is purchasing American education and fashioning it according to his whims. On September 21, 2013, Gates made the comment, “It would be great if our education stuff worked, but that we won’t know for probably a decade.” Education stuff? I am tired of being Bill Gates’ laboratory mouse. I am distressed that my national union president willingly participates in the experimentation. Since January 2009, AFT has accepted over $11.3 million from the Gates Foundation, $5.4 million of which is earmarked for CCSS. http://deutsch29.wordpress.com/2013/11/04/an-open-exchange-with-aft-president-randi-weingarten/

@Gary Tobin....It's NOT Mrs. Jagoe or the other parents I have a concern about. It's those with a direct connection to the school board. My comments stem from past experience with this school board. Whether you wish to accept it or not, a design has been put in place and everything presented to date reflects it. Every document lays out the ground work for a pre-determined configurations changing out town's schools to mirror a Magnet model. Everything posted by the consultants revolve around facilities. There are NO details on the academic impact on our kids presented by the consultants, despite being extremely detailed in the area of state reimbursements and facility-centric data. Our town is being led by a very calculating school board, whose overzealous attitudes are going to have a devastating affect not only on our kids, but also on our town. As far as your criticisms of Bill Gates, keep in mind this man made his own fortune, he knows the real world. Who else but someone on the outside of this bureaucratic educational institution to best judge. Furthermore, other formidable Universities and Organizations have information that completely contradicts some of the proposals being reviewed. I find it EXTREMELY disturbing that this kind information has NOT been presented to the committee and reviewed. It is crystal clear that it has NOT, otherwise it would be clearly reflected not only in the minutes and presentations. This exercise is a smoke screen and our school board is being led by very short-sighted leadership and the LRPC are being led by Milone and MacBrown. If you attended any of the LRPC meeting, like I have, it would clearly evident. When is come to education in Milford, it's true that ignorance is bliss.

Concerned Parent - I'm sorry if you didn't pick up on my sarcasm in my comment. I see and agree with everything you typed. I don’t remember who mentioned it but there is certainly is an abundance of intimidation and repercussions for acting or voicing against the “Administration”, believe me. I do have to say there are more parents than anyone may think that reads Milford Patch. In addition to everything you commented on I consider the administration's and the BOE members’ need for power and career advancements. Like Superintendent, Dr. Feser. She is President of CAPSS and in direct line for State Education Commissioner. I could imagine she is looking forward to November’s Election when Malloy loses. It would look very impressive on her resume that she was instrumental on implementing a Magnet School in Milford. What better district than the City of Milford to be a model to follow for the rest of the state.
Concerned Parent February 18, 2014 at 01:44 PM
@Gary...A fews years back, I would not have been this vocal of my criticisms with the BOE or school board. This was mainly due to my children, I did not want them indirectly impacted due to my actions. Now they are older and so here I am. I've never compromised with kids and am not one to give up. I too question Dr Feser and even if there is a conflict of interest going on here. It is suspect to the point of warranting an investigation.

To concerned parent, I understand your position, years ago a group of citizens, came out against the Superintendent of schools. My kids were out of the Milford Public School System at that time. But one of the members of our group, had kids in the system and he lived on the border of two school districts in Milford. He was approached by the BOE that his child might have to go to the other school district. He backed out of the group. We later prevailed in our protest. Your fears were not unfounded. I am a lifelong Milford resident, and I can site other cases. Now is your chance to speak up. My advice to the parents that are opposed to the Mega School, start petitions, get the seniors involved, this Mega is going to cost millions in your tax dollars for something that is not needed. It is the ego trip of the proponents. Again welcome aboard.

@liz...I've been trying my best to do this, but unfortunately apathy appears to be my biggest hurdle.

concerned parent, I know, but hang in there. Good Luck.
Tim Chaucer February 28, 2014 at 11:38 AM
Mr. Tobin; Bill Gates is using the schools and our children as a laboratory. Computers should not be given to Elementary kids who cannot identify the Robin in their front yard or the apple tree it is sitting in or the minerals found in the yard. Young kids need great teachers-not computers. At the turn of the Century Connecticut schools had a bird day where all the kids learned about the birds. Arbor day meant something years ago as well. With "teaching to the test" will teachers ever plant trees or bulbs with their Elementary students? A foundation must be built in Elementary; Computers can help play a role at the secondary level but still a computer will never substitute for a great teacher. Our neighborhood schools were places where butterflies could emerge from cocoons or chicks could emerge from a fertile hens egg. A computer is a screen just like a textbook. Nothing beats a real chick hatching or a real artifact handled. Great teachers know this. Hartford does not.l
Tim Chaucer February 28, 2014 at 11:53 AM
Consolidated mega schools with larger populations will mean less individual attention for children and more time spent on school busses. Taxpayers: if these non neighborhood schools are approved, you will be paying millions more than you and I already have for all the recent upgrades to Law, Foran, and East Shore. Something smells and we all know it.
Tim Chaucer February 28, 2014 at 10:41 PM
Three key questions: 1. How can this Administration and Board justify a brand new $240 million High School? Are new bricks somehow better than aged bricks at Law and Foran? Obviously the fix is in. There is NO justification for it. NONE. NONE. The consultants and those who suggested the concept should leave/resign/just STOP ruining our neighborhood schools 2. Concerned parent has made a great point: Every year that people lose faith in a mistake laden (with NO ACCOUNTABILITY) school Administration YOUR REAL ESTATE PROPERTY VALUE GOES DOWN. 3. How much did the unnecessary reconfiguration to K-2, 3-5 cost the taxpayers of Milford 4 years ago? A friend of mine who has worked with school facilities for many years has told me that that MISTAKE COST TAXPAYERS PLENTY Good schools teach accountability for students; where is accountability for Mr. Cummings?

Here is a more sensible discussion and a more reasonable thought of the Long Range Planning Committee. Get a grip on the Milford School Administration’s scam and prevent them the belittling and destruction of the Milford School System. Follow the money from the tax payers through the administration to the consulting firm and how far back this money has traveled this route. Then follow the administration and the tangled web they have weaved for the past 5-6 years. Then go back to 2013’s election campaigns, just 4 months ago, and follow the candidates and their “vote for me I care about the communities, the parents and the kids” campaign. Just 4 months ago just about every member of the Board of Education campaigned and said the school grade configuration has to go back to PreK-5, 6-8. Here we are 2-3 months from the election and statements like “everyone I spoke to said they can wait till 2016-2017 school year”. This is not what the community and parents said. 2016-2017 is the same year Dr. Feser is supposed to respond to the parent survey, the survey from spring of 2013, and her lack of communicating and involving the community and parents in Milford’s education system. Yes, the spring of 2013 the survey was given and the BOE accepted the response of, I need 3-3 ½ years to reply and/or develop a plan to “better” her skills of communicating with the Milford Community and Parents.

@Gary Tobin - You comments are baseless and foolish.

I can actually hear the squirming...
Concerned Parent March 03, 2014 at 04:17 PM
Keep in mind, there are boards in our city who do not suffer from a political majority advantage...
Michael Brown March 03, 2014 at 05:33 PM
@Concerned Parent - What on earth are you talking about?
Gary Tobin March 03, 2014 at 05:38 PM
Mr. Michael Brown Because “You” said so they must be baseless and foolish. What was I thinking when I typed those comments, I forgot to discuss it with you and I didn't get "the party planner's" approval. Breaking news, I'm not you nor am I the Mayor of Milford. I don’t report to "the party planner". Sorry to spoil the party but the facts will surface to the top and the BOE, the school administration, Mr. Mayor and the Party Planner will all be in the back room figuring out how to put a spin on it. By the way, Mr. Mayor should send a press release out, of course using the party planner’s language art, and maybe take a stance on the proposed LRP ideas.
Concerned Parent March 04, 2014 at 09:17 AM
There are a LOT of issues with the current school board and question abuse of their roles. There are too many connections to special interest groups, backdoor decisions made (e.g. Live Oaks), and inclusions of parties in the Long Range Planning with existing companies that ironically are doing a EXPANSION project in Milford (East Shore). There is a lot of dirt in the Parson's building that needs to be cleaned up.
Gary Tobin March 04, 2014 at 12:14 PM
Concern Parent - I agree. There are many tangled webs weaved throughout the Parsons Building, political party and in many other city buildings. Joining The Baseball League In Milford; There are three list, The Yellow list, the Blue list and then of course the "White List". You first have to be on the white list to be considered a ball player. The yellow list are those trying out for the "Milford Team". The blue list are the big game ball players, starters. I'm sure it's a coincident but the colors yellow and blue make the color $green$.
Tmc March 05, 2014 at 11:09 PM
Some great things going on ITT; the squirming is getting deafening. Ty liz, for sharing that experience with us. Not one bit surprised it happened either.
