Girl Scouts of Connecticut, in partnership with Cablevision’s Power to Learn Education Initiative, served more than 75 Girl Scouts and 20 adults during an internet safety event at Harborside Middle School in Milford on Saturday, December 1.
During the half-day event, Girl Scouts participated in panel discussions about a variety of topics dealing with digital media, including ways to combat cyberbullying, making safe decisions, and learning positive social networking skills. At a special closing ceremony beginning at 11:45 a.m., Girl Scout Cadettes received their Netiquette badge, while Girl Scout Seniors received a special patch designed by Power to Learn, the “I’m Internet Smart” patch.
Lieutenant Governor Nancy Wyman and State Senator Gayle Slossberg (D-14) attended and assisted in the handing out of these badges and patches to the girls. Wyman, who served as Girl Scouts of Connecticut’s honorary chairperson for the 100th Anniversary, told the girls that she was proud of the work they were doing in learning how to better utilize the Internet.
“Cyberbullying is a horrible thing,” Wyman said. “We have to make sure that all of you know how to handle these situations and make them better. I want to congratulate you on what you accomplished today. I know you’ll spread the word about making better choices online to your family and friends.”
Senator Slossberg praised the parents in attendance for bringing their girls to the program.
“The investment you make in these bright young women is a sound investment in our collective future and we're grateful, because these young women are our future leaders,” Senator Slossberg said.
Mary Barneby, Girl Scouts of Connecticut’s CEO, said that Saturday’s program is another example of how Girl Scouts remains relevant and current for many girls.
“We’ve come so far over 100 years of our organization,” Barneby said. “It’s important that our programming remains relevant and that we keep girls informed. Saturday’s programming was a great day for our girls to learn and share information, thanks to our partner, Cablevision. We’re also grateful for Lieutenant Governor Nancy Wyman and State Senator Gayle Slossberg’s support. When you think about our promise, they live by our promise.”
