At a conference this week in Orange, U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro said economic conditions are improving for foreign trade by Connecticut businesses.
U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro, D-CT, who often promotes businesses in Milford and last year hosted a forum on exporting for small businesses, had good news for manufacturers at an exporting conference this week. The New Haven Register reported that DeLauro told local business people that Connecticut manufacturers are benefiting from a recent turn toward more favorable conditions for overseas trade. DeLauro said U.S. trade exports increase by 16 percent in the last year, following an increase of 17 percent the year before. The conference was held by the U.S. Department of Commerce and the Connecticut District Export Council at Yale University’s West Campus in Orange.

It's been almost four years since Paul's Famous Hamburgers closed their doors. What should happen next?
Built in 1946, Paul's Famous Hamburgers served up hot dogs, cheeseburgers, fries and onion rings to the Milford community for 62 years before shuttering its doors on September 16th, 2008. Milford Community & Economic Development Director Bob Gregory confirmed that there have been a few interested parties over the years, but no concrete offers have been made on the property on Boston Post Rd. Paul's is located on a great piece of property in Milford. Should it be saved as an historical landmark or demolished to make room for a new business? We pose the question to you: What should become of Paul's Famous Hamburgers?

The Naugatuck Ave. restaurant is this week's Readers' Choice winner.
When you're deciding on the perfect place to take mom for her special day this year, why not go to the place your neighbors have declared the best in town for Mother's Day brunch? Mom deserves the best, after all. And according to Milford Patch readers and account-holders, this week's Readers' Choice contest winner is Aldario's, the fine Italian and Mediterranean cuisine restaurant on Naugatuck Ave. With a majority of the vote at 51%, Aldario's took home the prize fairly easily. The Corner Restaurant came in second with 15%. D Sorrella had this to say about Aldario's: This place has wonderful food and a friendly atmosphere. Never disappointed in all the years we've been going there. The Chillean seabass special is my favorite and my …

What should become of the Showcase Milford - Cherry St., which is in a great location, but has been vacant for six years?
With the closing of Blockbuster Video at the forefront of movie-lovers' minds, it's easy to forget that shuttered landmark of movie-watching entertainment right across the street: Showcase Milford - Cherry St. Just over a half-decade ago, National Amusements was a strong presence in Milford and Orange with Fourplex Cinemas, Showcase Milford and Showcase Orange all showing movies seven days a week. In just over a year, though, all three theatres closed down. Showcase Orange's property was bought by United Illuminating and the Connecticut Post 14 Cinema De Lux--now Rave Motion Pictures Connecticut Post 14--replaced the Fourplex. The only National Amusements theatre still standing in town is Showcase Milford - Cherry St. There have been …

Connecticut’s minimum wage could rise a quarter a year for the next two years to $8.75. A new study says that minimum wage increases do little to effectively help poor people.
The Connecticut House of Representatives approved raising the minimum wage from $8.25 to $8.75 in the next two years. The vote passed by an 88-62 margin and the bill’s fate is now up to the Senate. According to the Hartford Courant, the proposal was pushed by House Speaker – and U.S. Congress candidate - Chris Donovan. He reportedly backed a more aggressive bill, which would have raised minimum wage to $9.75 in two years and then tied future increases to inflation. Economists and politicians have never reached a consensus on the merits of raising the minimum wage and the potential effects on employment numbers. A new study from the University of Georgia states that raising the minimum wage doesn’t help poor people. From the study’s …
