Milford's Earth Day Brings Together All to Beautify the City
Five-hundred hours of collective labor is what went into the event, which was held on Saturday.
More than 200 volunteers were out Saturday cleaning up our town.
Boys and Girl Scouts, Jonathan Law football team, Alternative Education students, Save The Sound, Women's Garden Club, Mayor Richetelli, Bic employees, sole citizens and families all met at 8 a.m. for breakfast and instructions.
By 9 a.m., volunteers were planting native wetland flowers, maintaining a blueberry patch, cleaning trash and other maintenance at seven sites at Eisenhower Park. Others were boarding buses to be dropped off at eight different sites around town. A center to drop off unwanted electronics was also on-site.
Teresa Montanari, 16, of Milford was cleaning up the marsh at Silver Sands State Park.
"I hope to organize another day to clean up because this one day is not enough," said the teenager.
Thirteen Bic employees were hard at work cleaning up the long road leading to the entrance of Silver Sands.
"Bic wanted to participate because sustainability is a big part of our organization. Our products are sustainable and we strive to have less of an impact on the environment on a global basis," said Jill Klimack, spokesperson for Bic Corporation.
Each site around town had a trained site leader along with volunteers performing different tasks. At 12:30 buses were back at Eisenhower for lunch. Lunch was partially donated by Subway, Napoli Deli, McDonald's and Rita's Italian Ice. The Boys And Girl Scouts Of Milford set up the event last night and slept overnight at the park. Participants enjoyed lunch at picnic tables, raffles, displays and games after the cleanup.
"Six months of planning and $5,000 goes into the event," said Vincent Piselli, founder and director of Milford Earth Day.
"Participants are charged a nominal fee and proceeds will go towards the following year to fund supplies and food, the rest is subsidized by donations (approximately half the cost)," he said. "We hope to get to a point where we have enough donations so that we do not have to charge anyone because this needs to be a complete community event."
Five-hundred hours of labor went into the cleanup yesterday in beautifying our city.
Also around town, Milford was showing the Earth Day spirit. Milford Fire Station 7 collected 97 unwanted propane tanks. The Police Department,in alliance with The Prevention Council and DEA collected prescription medication at Walnut Beach for proper disposal. Residents also put unwanted items on the curb in cooperation of "Free Day". Anyone can pick up an item they see. Anything left behind will be taken care of by the city.
