Milford Flies High in Great Backyard Bird Count

The city ranks in the top 10 in Connecticut for participation and species documented, so let's see your pics!

Milford had a standout performance in The Great Backyard Bird Count of 2012! The city placed fifth in the number of species reported and seventh in the number of checklists submitted in Connecticut.

The 23 checklists documented a total of 60 bird species during the four-day event from Feb. 17-20, according to results available on the GBBC's website.

Milford joined birders throughout North America in the effort to "create a real-time snapshot of where the birds are across the continent."

To date, during the 2012 count:

  • 85,018 checklists have been submitted
  • 604 species have been observed
  • 12,065,219 individual birds have been counted

In Connecticut:

  • 148 species have been observed
  • 103,996 individual birds have been counted

In Milford:

  • 1,014 individual birds have been counted
  • 60 species have been observed
  • 23 checklists have been submitted

The species spotted in Milford are, among others:

  • Brant (58)
  • Gadwall (8)
  • Red-throated Loon (1)
  • Cooper's Hawk (2)
  • Mourning Dove (68)
  • European Starling (100)
  • American Goldfinch (14)

Checklists can be submitted through March 5.
