Milford's Wreath Laying Today a Tribute to Veterans

This is a press release from the Veterans Ceremony and Parade Commission.

City of Milford Veterans Ceremony and Parade Commission

The City of Milford will host the annual Veteran’s Day Parade on Sunday, November 6th at 2 p.m. All units and marchers are asked to assemble at the Daniel Wasson Field parking lot at 1 p.m.

The City Veteran’s Day Wreath Laying Ceremony will be held on November 11th in front of City Hall at 10:45 a.m.  All are invited to attend this short but moving ceremony.

There also will be a brief ceremony to commemorate the improvement work done by the Veteran’s Graves Preservation Committee at 10:15 a.m. on November 11, at the Revolutionary War Monument in Milford Cemetery.

Please join us this Veteran's Day to honor our veterans who have served this country to ensure and preserve our freedom, as they still do today.

In this country we have Memorial day to celebrate the lives of Americans of our Armed Forces who have DIED. But Veterans Day is quite different. Here we honor those members of our Armed Forces who survived their service and are still alive.
I have always said it is always better to honor the man and not his memory.

I’d love a 74th birthday present on Election day.

As a Special Forces Vietnam Veteran and Past Commander of the VFW in Willington, CT, I never want to ignore the memory of those men with whom I served and their great sacrifice. Veteran's Day may be intended for those who survived or never heard a shot fired in anger, but I will never forget my departed comrades who paid the ultimate sacrifice. To me, Veterans Day is dedicated to those who served their country both living and dead. To ignore one is certainly disrespectful of their service and sacrifice.

Mr. Kauffman, with all due respect to your service I do not want you to forget your comrades. My peers fought in the so called Forgotton War in Korea, but Veterans Day originally was Armistace Day to commerate the end of WWI on the 11th Month, of the 11th day and at the 11th hour. So we no longer honor those men who fought to end all wars, just as Memorial Day was to honor the dead of the Civil War.
On each of those two days I fly the colors of our country in respect to each group of our Armed Forces. Were it otherwise we would celebrate all veterans, both living or dead on but one day instead of two.
In reading this article we see that we now celebrate this holiday when it is most convenient for the living. In this years parade will be the Hon. Greg Smith, outgoing Chair of the Milford Board of Aldermen and Past Cmdr. of the Milford VFW so your group will be well represented.
